Ah, now this is true.
The single greatest short story written in English is either Hemingway’s “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” or James Joyce’s “The Dead.” Other contenders in this weight division: O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” & Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener.”

Virginia Woolf and The Beatles. Each did all there was to do in their art in about 7 years.
Today, 83 years ago, Virginia Woolf drowned. 22 days went by before her body was recovered from the River Ouse. It’s always good to remember her incredible literary output, particularly during a 7-year period. I’m convinced that I will never read a better novel than The Waves.
