Congratulations to Professor Tom Burbacher, who is retiring after 32 years as a faculty member in DEOHS! “Tom has had a major influence on DEOHS, both in his contributions to toxicology and to instruction,” said Chair Michael Yost. @uwsph @ecogenetix

Our members Lianne Sheppard and Anjum Hajat were featured in the news for their work documenting higher levels of ultrafine pollution in historically redlined communities. #AirPollution #AirQuality #EnvironmentalJustice

Current #airpollution disparities mirror Seattle’s history of redlining, especially for harmful ultrafine particles. New study in @EHPonline by UW alum @KayaBramble, DEOHS and @UWBiostat Prof. Lianne Sheppard & colleagues. @uwnews @uwsph @MarshallJulian https://t.co/sd4kmgWdau

This sucks. But of course we're not going to see necessary progress without a compelling vision of the future and meaningful policy change. https://t.co/vgc7iKqy4l

The world is falling well short of the progress needed to meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals by 2030 in areas ranging from poverty to clean energy to biodiversity.

Loneliness kills. Great work by two of my former #scicomm students that they asked I help share broadly. 🥹 https://t.co/pJDQErFH2H

No one has ever asked me what it’s like. Ever. No family member, no friend, no doctor, no naturopath, no social worker, no hospital staff, no colleague, no other patient, not even the therapist I had who did her Ph.D. on bipolar disorder. Literally no one.

So, as a start to ending my silence, I want to share one surprising thing about my experience of Bipolar Type I.

“And what kind of culture is that?” she asked me. “White supremacy culture,” I answered, realizing as I answered, that my silence about my condition needed to end. My secretive behavior could only be making it harder for other people to manage their mental health.

It was today during a phone call with a colleague that I realized I need to be more transparent about my condition. After listening to me talk at length, she told me not to apologize. I said I felt like I had to because I was trained as an academic not to take time off.

The decision to take additional time off was hard. I felt ashamed when I discussed it with the few family members, friends, and colleagues who know about my condition, despite all their support.

This is also the first time I plan to take the full amount of time off of work recommended by my doctor (a month). If I had done that last time (August), maybe I could have avoided the most recent episode.
