The filmmaker Humphrey Jennings was born #OnThisDay in 1907. His collected films are available in the library, including The Silent Village (1943) – made in response to the Nazi atrocity in the mining community of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, and set in Cwmgiedd in the Swansea Valley.

Dealing with the Lidice massacre in art and culture, like for example in "The Silent Village", was very important to establish remembrance for the victims internationally. It also helped the "Lidice Shall Live" Campaign to raise funds for building a new village of Lidice.

To be percise, only 9 children were selected for the so called "Germanisation" program of the Lebensborn association. All other 82 Lidice children over the age of 1 were killed in a Gas van on the way to the Chelmo Concentration Camp.

On this day 77 years ago – on 10.6.1942 – the Nazis slaughtered the inhabitants of Lidice and completely demolished the small Czech village, intending to wipe it off the map for eternity. The atrocity came in retaliation for the killing of governor Reinhard Heydrich. #Neverforget
