Using focus groups, a national survey, and a field experiment, we found that the broader social context of parenting/parental surveillance negatively affects Black parents’ participation in early childhood home visiting programs despite their interest.

We examined how the broader social context affects Black parents’ engagement with early childhood home visiting programs - which have substantial evidence and federal support, but are plagued by low take-up.

Using survey, admin, and census data, the extent of gentrification occurring in youths' neighborhoods was linked to ⬇️ mental health and ⬇️ math achievement among youth with low, but not high subjective family economic status.

And another dissertation paper is (finally) out! This paper was inspired by the rapidly #gentrifying #Durham neighborhood I lived in during my Ph.D. @DukePsychNeuro and @DukeSanford 🏘️.

Our findings show that this mismatch between WORDS v. ACTIONS matters. Communicating support for diversity while doing little to redress systemic inequities will not reduce racism-related gaps in school achievement and may exacerbate mental health disparities.

Many schools (13%) say they value diversity (e.g., “we inspire students to become life-long learners who will embrace diversity"), but still had large racialized discipline gaps & disparities in gifted education placement; plus a mostly white teaching force and student body.

Forever grateful to my amazing mentors @agpines, @sarahegaither, @Gen_Pov, Rebekah Levine Coley, and @samteixeira10, and to my *MOM* who flew out and helped me care for barely 2-month-old Flora while I prepared for an academic job talk. It takes a village 💙🌎(5/5).
