Major changes coming. Higgins. McAleese. Robinson. All have had this cult of personality; being kind and and empathetic and compassionate, despite evidence to the contrary. I can't see that cult of personality hold up when Connolly becomes president. Too much has been done.

The IMF: Ireland economy growing good Me, a taxi driver: College students have stopped going out. None of them leave their campuses any more. Camden St and Harcourt St are dead Monday to Thursday. This was not the case in previous post Covid years.
Ireland's economy is forecast to be the fastest growing of the world's most advanced economies this year, according to the International Monetary Fund's latest World Economic Outlook https://t.co/hUc2TWdnWi

Great character. He's like the Alan Partridge of criminals. The complete opposite of a Michael Corleone figure. Carries the show to an overwhelming degree.

The mural in John Boy's apartment. Rappers, JFK, John Boy with Hughie in the middle, boomer musicians. Interesting bit in one of the series where Michael Collins is not recognized by one of the gang members but the rest are.

This country has so much potential. Economic, social, cultural, you name it. And its all being thrown away for GDP line go up.
@LastGael It's utterly depressing how lacking in vision and pride our establishment is. There is such enormous potential in what seems like obvious duty to bring our emigrants/diaspora back and revive our culture in a great nation building project.

I've been watching this again. I forgot about how big this show was back in the day. Inferior to Hardy Bucks as a document of Ireland post crash, but not without its strengths; deals with moral decay better than most Irish art and media these days. Compare to nonsense like Kin.

Over the past thirty years or so, the overall ability/competency of the Irish elite has begun to wane. Across our institutions. That is one of the fascinating outcomes of this whole presidential election clown show. More people know. We are living under a Derek dictatorship.
I canโt be the only one who gets the sense that Ireland is like a ship without a heading, crewed by fools, with storms on the horizon.

The hilarious thing is that if they had acted as a real Right wing party for the last decade they could have benefitted from a healthier demographic situation, reduced debt, instigated a project to deglobalize the economy & limit immigration. Books will be written of this failure
FFG know its over. Tom & Jerry levels of retardation & sheer arrogance in their ability to manage the election process blow up in their face. The Irish establishment has lost the ability to govern or even be effective through dirty tactics. The Left is more effective politically.

The Irish government is keen on building Soviet-style blocks to lure international investment funds to extract rents from already cash-strapped tenants All in the name of โboosting supplyโ which does nothing to address costs ๐ก๐ฎ๐ช

For the past while, it was my opinion that Connolly was the least worst option because of what she did against the hate speech laws and defending unvaccinated people. I still think this. However, it looks like she's increasingly likely to win anyway so ๐คทโโ๏ธ. Spoil a good option.
Spoiling Your Vote is a legitimate democratic act when the system itself becomes farcical. In 2017, four million French voters deliberately spoiled their ballots rather than back either Macron or Le Pen....almost 10%. Given the blocked nominations, whipped councillors and TDs,

The reason none of the criticisms of Catherine Connolly stick is because politically dissident people who are disasstisfied with the status quo, both Left and Right alike, view the media as an arm of the Government (rightly or wrongly). Irish media is funded by the State under

You said this three years ago.
Women who identified as a 'true democrat' last week, calls for the constitution to be suspended & rule of law ignored so Election can be cancelled. Would be a fair question to to ask the TDs and Senators who signed her nomination papers if they would again, if asked?

No in my opinion. He's got no chance of being elected, it eats into spoil the vote/Connolly and is worse than the two of them, and it makes Fianna Fail look better.
@LastGael Should we vote for Gavin, assuming he won't take up the role?
