Working on a PhD on the political economy of Cuba in the 1960s. Historical materialism, high brodernism, slow cinema, extra-pass basketball. CAT/EN.

The most famous anti-Stalinist party was Catalan. The guy who killed Trotsky was Catalan. Frantz Fanon's mentor? Catalan. The only foreign official in North Korea? Catalan. Some claim that Engels knew a bit of Catalan. We are behind every leftist tendency.

The fact that Iran is one of the countries with the highest number of gender-affirming surgeries per year while being aggressively homophobic has an underllying logic but it's still kinda crazy to me

A Question For The Brodernists: I don't want to criticise people for being multilingual (I speak a few languages myself) and for doing their job, but isn't it a bit weird that the same guy has translated brodernist novels from THREE different languages? Like how good can they be

@LarryAlbertGil Beckert is a lightweight. A bourgeois historian par excellence.

@oikeios have you gone over your thoughts re Beckert & New History of Capitalism in any article? Do you have any texts in mind that you would recommend as a counterpoint?

Going to dive into Beckert's mammoth soon. I have many intelligent oomfies here, so does anyone have any recs on what to read to balance/counter Beckert? I guess Braudel+Wallerstein is the obvious one, but I also want Marxist counterpoints (please no EM Wood/early Brenner).
The mailman was like "omg this is heavy" that's because he didn't know it is the biggest publication month of this year for historyheads 🫡

When I was 15 I decided I needed to start reading serious literature. I bought and read Ulysses in 20 days. I understood like 5% of it but it threw me into a long obsession with modernist literature and Irish history that eventually led to me living in these isles.
When I decided to "get into philosophy" at 16 I googled the "best philosophy book" and ordered Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit

Rewatching Tarkovksy because I miss that afterglow of bourgeois high culture that could only have been achieved in a deformed workers' state

I have a visceral hate for Hindutva. I have Kashmiri and Muslim Indian friends who have genuinely suffered under Hindutva, but this is not what this seems to be about.

I don't think it should take being that one friend that is too woke to be appalled at how normalised anti-Indian hate on the internet is now

People look at my pale ass and my red-ish hair in this way when I tell them that I'm not northern European and that I'm in fact half Cuban
