Poverty and hunger are rising; development is sinking. In our multipolar world, no country or group of countries can stand by as billions of people struggle with the basics of food, water, education, healthcare, and jobs. Time for global leadership & solidarity.
Rich countries cannot ignore the fact that the vast majority of countries worldwide are suffering through a deep financial crisis. The world is counting on #G7 economies to demonstrate global leadership and global solidarity. https://t.co/Q7FIIxYX2t

The climate crisis is not gender neutral. It exacerbates existing inequalities, creating unique threats to the livelihoods, health & safety of women & girls. To create a sustainable world for all, we need to put gender equality at the heart of #ClimateAction.

We won't be able to achieve #ZeroHunger without small-scale farmers. They already grow 1/3 of the world's food. Think of what they could achieve with the right investments ✊🌾🌏

This month marks 35 years since the GPEI was formed to deliver on a historic promise: the worldwide eradication of polio. Since then, cases have been reduced by 99.9%! But, we can’t stop now. Global commitment is vital to #EndPolio so no child is paralyzed by this disease again.

Despite enormous & increasing impact of the conflict in Sudan & ongoing climate disasters, today the Govt announcing a further cut to the humanitarian support offered to people in dire need in East Africa. The overall cut is £13m, around 8% of an already massively reduced budget.

I am concerned of cuts to East Africa region: "This announcement risks falling tragically short of what is needed to avert famine in the drought-stricken East of Africa. Last year 43,000 people are estimated to have died due to hunger in Somalia alone.” " https://t.co/cC7CKyZvVc

Labour recognising that having aid providers define what counts as aid is untenable. US may also be sympathetic given @SamanthaJPower's criticism of overcounting

I can't see any case for moving on from a focus on poverty eradication when ~650mn people live in the most difficult material conditions in the world. I was very, very happy @PreetKGillMP said that would be Labour's priority for international development.

This was my favourite part of Preet's talk. Poverty hasn't been defeated, not close. And there is no good case for moving away from poverty eradication as the guiding light for all our development work.
ICYMI: I spoke to @CGDev about my priorities for International development under @UKLabour Government. “The world has lost its focus on ending poverty, and we need to get that back.”

The DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal has so far raised over £74 million thanks to the amazing generosity of the UK public, including £5 million in #UKAidMatch Aid is getting through and essential items are reaching those affected. 1/19
