In the absence of krit1/ccm1, ECs lack circumferential actin, undergo reduced cell deformation and exhibit enlarged vessels, thus providing a mechanistic understanding of how cerebral cavernous malformation arises.

We discovered that the combined activities of EC deformation and changes in cell number define vessel diameter and length. We further showed that circumferential actomyosin bundles bearing high tensile forces deform ECs to constrict vessels.
