As always, I'm so proud of Seattle for taking a compassionate, research-based approach to this epidemic with the LEAD Program. I'm thrilled we were able to secure more funds to support and expand this program nationwide. We need just solutions like this if we want to succeed.

Pre-arrest diversion must be made simple & as time-sensitive for law enforcement. If process takes a lot longer than arrest, it won't work! #RecoveryNotArrest

A5: A key lesson learned from early pre-arrest diversion efforts is that behavioral health must make itself available 24/7365 to police, and police must manage their expectations as to how recovery actually looks and works, which means it takes time #RecoveryNotArrest @Pretrial

A4: Absolutely not! Pre-arrest diversion programs are for everyone! Oftentimes the barriers to diversion are different for rural areas, including significant transportation burdens. Stay tuned to our next report from #TACResearch on this issue! #RecoveryNotArrest

A6: You can expect rates of incarceration to drop for low level crimes and increased satisfaction with law enforcement. You will also see more people receiving services that they are in need of; rather than jail. #RecoveryNotArrest

A4: Pre-Arrest diversion programs have value in every community. One consistent component of these approaches is the increased positive relationships between citizens and police officers. That is an invaluable outcome of these programs.#recoverynotarrest

A3: We believe that a person getting diverted to a wide array of service options and a person they can trust and build a relationship with is more important and more sustainable than ordering a particular form of "treatment"; in the traditional sense. #recoverynotarrest

A3: In the LEAD model, participants get diverted to a Person and relationship. This individual meets the participant "where they are" using a Harm Reduction approach and works with them on self-identified goals. #recoverynotarrest

A2: Incarcerating someone for struggling with mental health or substance use issues is no different than incarcerating someone struggling with keeping their high blood pressure or diabetes under control. It's nonsensical.
