Leaving X is something I should have done a while ago. While I stood out with a decay in content quality, @elonmusk doing Hitler greetings goes 10 steps too far. Switching to BlueSky @maxkorbmacher.bsky.social.

The database makes replications visible, easily findable via a graphical user interface, and tracks replication rates across various factors, such as publication year or journal. This will facilitate future efforts to evaluate the robustness of psychological research.

We need more longitudinal studies, and more studies examining how to make brain age more specific (to disorders, etc.) and explainable. Alternatively, there might be other useful brain markers.

That means that brain age cannot differentiate between a healthy non-norm confirming brain, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s patient’s brain. Ergo: Difficult to implement as a biomarker, prognostic tool, etc. See e.g.,

Wrap-up:.Brain age gap differences are present when comparing many different groups & shown to predict mortality, etc. However, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms is still limited. Until those are clear, brain age will remain unspecific and not explainable.

Moreover, T1-weighted BAG did actually associate with brain feature change. So perhaps T1-weighted BAG does say something about grey matter brain change on the level of brain regions?.

This is not to say that brain age cannot be useful. Since BAG measures the brain state (at least for diffusion and multimodal MRI-derived BAG), this state (not the future change) might be what is diagnostic.

The findings provide new and more pronounced insights into the mechanism of BAG. For example, a higher BAG does not automatically indicate the presence of a disorder, which would however be crucial for diagnostics.

What does that mean?. First of all, our findings show limitations of BAG for longitudinal inference or as a potential biomarker of brain change.

Finally, using mass-univariate associations showed that brain age is limited in reflecting risk factors for age-related diseases and mortality in our sample (free of neurological or psychiatric disorders). The exception are cardiometabolics, including diabetes and hypertension.
