Michelle started as an Assistant Professor at NYU which was a sexist horror story. Most of her NYU colleagues have gone to their eternal rewards. She would be very happy that "new" NYU faculty includes several outstanding young women inorganic chemists.

Michelle Millar, one of the first women chemistry profs, died 12 yrs ago today. She never gave up the struggle even though it took her 14 yrs to get tenure. @MIT_WIC @ACSINORDivision #InternationalWomenInScienceDay

The most important thing that my group did that got me tenure many years ago was isolating the compounds that gave the similar red color to solutions when you react thiols and phenols with Fe3+.

Before you pick your adviser, talk with his or her students, It is as important as your talks with your possible adviser. Even more important than the hours per week is the number of years students take to earn their degree.

Too many of these kinds of hand-wringing posts, implying that PhD students are indentured vs enabled, fun-loving nerds. As a student, I took vacations freely, routinely worked 60h+ weeks. Great fun! Then, 5y later, as a young faculty member, the curtains were really drawn. Wow!.
