i can see Dane really trying to pick apart Percy's brain and uncover his true fear only to immediately rage and just throw everything he has at Percy because he can't decipher how "papier-mache dragons" and "naughty garden gnomes" fit into the equation

The whole movie, Thumper is objectified and dismissed as nothing more than a tool; just another piece of sentient machinery in a world full of them. I believe the only time Thumper even receives positive reinforcement is well after Dane has already gotten into its head.

It's honestly so tragic that Thumper holds so much narrative power without even knowing it. As a result, every choice it ends up making is influenced by others. Rusty spends the whole day paranoid about Boulder when Dane's real pawn was the unassuming, nobody drilling machine.

It's almost poetic in a way..? Thumper was always destined to be nothing more than a tool/pawn - intended to be used by the workmen, only to be used by Dane. Like any other "chosen one" it only exists to serve a greater purpose, but once said purpose is fufilled, it gets-

It has arguably the most bearing on the plot - being the catalyst to boulder's rampage, which in itself is what ultimately lured Hawin to Ulfstead. Thumper is the key to - as it puts it - "freeing" Dane

It was the one character (or tool) capable of either triggering or resolving the film's conflict - a macguffin of sorts. Only here, the twist is that Dane is the ONLY one who notices and pursues it. No one else actually realises its significance, not even Thumper itself.

I've seen films/TV shows where the "chosen one" is unaware of their duty or power or whatever. But this is the first instance I've seen in which literally no-one EXCEPT the villain is aware. It just exemplifies how much of a threat Dane really is. He picks up on the things-

i think one common attribute found in a lot of the other specials is that they often prioritise mass marketing, over actually paying tribute to the franchise (its values, themes, and whatnot) in itself thats not even a bad thing. i don't think the show's even been all that--

relevant since the 90's (outside of meme culture ig), so it makes sense Gullane/HiT/whoever would want to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. but it does mean a lot of the specials can feel kind of alienating - especially when you have shit like SLOTLT coming right off--

the same engine who single-handedly ran the railway alone for the best part of a decade - all while on the cusp of breaking down - spends half the film complaining about his paint being messed up. and the weird part is, i kind of don't hate it..?

it'd be pretty hypocritical of me to dislike his portrayal here since i don't really mind how any of the other characters (henry, toby, james, etc.) are portrayed that being said i do still have the feeling his role here would have been better suited for someone like duncan: a--

was skarloey always this uptight and commanding in the CGI timeline, or is this just some subconscious form of compensating for all those years spent helplessly awaiting repairs in his barn?

i do actually like this take on the character, as bizarre as it may be. what i think both skarloey and rheneas in this era could have benefitted from was a loose adaptation of "Very Old Engines"

for a brief moment it felt like towards the end of the series we were going to receive some legitimate insight into the root of james' overbearing characterisation then we were cursed with this abomination and he managed to somehow become even more one-note

It's all there - Stepney's self-pity, James' self-loathing, Thumper's desperation to prove its worth. The whole time Dane claims that he can read their fears so clearly, when all he's doing is projecting. Looking back on part ii and iii in particular, with the added context, it-

@AubriStrawbri i know exactly what you mean lol the later CGI stuff has a lot of faults but honestly i gotta respect its ability to deliver entertaining and bold stories that aren't afraid to deter from the usual formula the older HiT episodes always seemed to follow

There's just so much character and style to this one film alone - I can't lie I didn't even know it was supposed to be part of a trilogy, it just stands so well on its own. Going into it, I just expected some run-of-the-mill HiT model series inspired adaptation of PP&Q--

Don't get me wrong, I've always enjoyed simple, straightforward adaptations of RWS/fandom stories, but I know for a fact that no amount of trainz 'Super Rescue' or 'Escape' audiobook adaptations could ever leave much more of a lasting impression than this type of storytelling.
