Dear vegans:
A calf is a calf; not a baby.
Cows live in herds; not families.
AI is a method of conception; not rape.
Cows produce milk; not breastmilk.
Cows are animals; not people.
Don’t change the narrative to suit your own sensationalist agenda.

It’s the start of

so let’s repeat this:
A calf is a calf; not a baby
Cows live in herds; not families
AI is a form of conception; not rape
Cows produce milk; not breastmilk
Cows are animals; not people
Don’t change the narrative to suit your sensationalist agenda.
It’s the first day of
#Februdairy
and here’s some of our dairy BULLS enjoying a Saturday morning snooze.
Yes, dairy bulls exist
Yes, dairy bulls are well treated
Yes, dairy bulls are valuable
Yes, dairy bulls have a purpose

A group of 4 week old dairy calves showing absolutely no ill effects of being separated from their mothers for the last month.
Better still; all of this group are bull calves.
Isn’t it crazy how much the vegan perception of farming differs from reality?

WHAT A CALF 👌🏻😍💪🏻👍🏻
This newborn bull calf is only a few hours old and is typical of the high quality bulls we produce each year. The British Friesian really is the No.1 choice for producing high value dairy bull calves this Spring 😎

To be clear: everyone (including vegans) should have the freedom to make dietary decisions and hold their own opinions but don’t try to tear down one industry to advance another.
Vegan advertising should carry photos of tofu, kale and avocado NOT cows and calves.
#februdairy
This newborn calf has nothing to fear from life on a dairy farm.
She’ll be raised on a grass based farm and will never be hungry/thirsty or be mistreated in any way and enjoy the highest quality of life standards that any animal can!
RT if you agree 🐄🐮💪🏻

#teamdairy
No bull calf has ever been exported, sold for veal or euthanatised on farm in the 70 years we’ve been farming at Kilsunny
The bulls are regularly shown on social media, with their life followed from birth to when they’re sold for breeding at 12-18 months

This cow calved yesterday.
Separated from her calf, back in the parlour, back with the main herd and showing all signs of a happy, well cared for animal.
This is the REALITY of small, family run dairy so please get the FACTS not the anti-farming propaganda from vegan extremists
As proud dairy farmers for over 70 years, we have never produced a ‘waste’ product or an unwanted male calf. We rear all our bulls to maturity, including our crossbred beef bulls and ALL of our males have value.
Thank goodness for the British Friesian 🐮👑

The one and only, Old Tulip ❤️
20.03.2010 - 07.12.2023
Nearly 14 years on the farm together and we would have taken 14 more in a heartbeat. A once in a lifetime kinda cow ☝🏻🙏

We’re a day early for the start of
#Veganuary
but here’s some happy, healthy dairy calves (yes, including bulls!) enjoying their breakfast this morning.
Let’s all hope that the reality of farming doesn’t get swallowed up by the vegan propaganda over the next month!

In honour of the last day of

here’s more footage of a happy, grass fed dairy cow 😊
Farmers are often under pressure online to ‘prove’ that their cows are happy, healthy and well treated but we just let the cows do the talking for us 😎☘️☀️🐮

Vegan: cows should only produce milk for her calf not humans
Farmer: the average cow yields 25 litres daily and a calf needs about 6 litres
Vegan: milk is unhealthy
Farmer: milk is full of calcium, vitamin B12, healthy fats & proteins
Vegan: *trolls someone else*
#februdairy
We had a cow calve today and this is the REAL aftermath of separating her from her newborn calf.
It’s not veganuary or februdairy but real farm life is always worth sharing 👏🏻

Today’s newborn baby calf happily trotting off to the calf pens.
Notice the cow is nowhere to be seen and the calf isn’t being coerced or mistreated in any way. The reality of separating cow and calf really isn’t as dramatic as some would have you believe ☺️🐮🥛
#februdairy
One of the best things about working with animals is getting to know all of their individual personalities.
Old Tulip is always last to milk and takes life at her own pace. At 12 years of age (and milking on her 11th calf), she deserves it!

Our first ever red heifer 😍
This little lady is out of a 10,900 litre cow who did 810 kgs milk solids in her last lactation & has a 12 month grandson available now.
We’ve wanted a red heifer for ages & we couldn’t have asked for a better (or milkier!) bloodline to kick off with!
Some of the dairy calves enjoying their very first day at grass ☺️
No matter how many times you’ve seen it, it never gets old 🤗🐮☘️

The cattle took a backseat last night as we celebrated Granny’s 100th birthday. She and Grandad founded the Kilsunny Farm in 1949 (with the purchase of six acres and 4 cows) and we’re still farming on the same site three generations & 72 years later.
HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY GRANNY!!
This bull calf is our first new arrival of the month.
He will NOT be shot in the head, stunned and buried in the ground, hit over the head or killed for veal.
It’s so important that consumers get the facts about what ACTUALLY happens on dairy farms in Ireland.

Christmas morning at Kilsunny 💫
We milk every single day at Kilsunny (730 times a year!) with Christmas being no different. Farmers, growers, retailers and distributors work tirelessly all year round to ensure there is fresh food in the shops and on tables all yard round.
Fran McNulty on Morning Ireland saying ‘dairy bull calves are value less’, has obviously never heard of the British Friesian
24 hour old British Friesian bull calf in the video below
To be fair to Fran, could never understand why more farmers aren’t using British Friesian 🤷♂️
Spring has arrived very early at Kilsunny with the milking dairy cows returning to pasture for the first time this morning.
It looks like they’re pretty happy to see fresh grass again!!

The biggest challenge this newborn dairy calf faces isn’t the separation from its dam but the sheer force of the wind as he makes the journey to the calf pens.
He can just about stay upright!! 😜💨

The usual outraged vegan response to everything related to farming is always ‘would you like it if that was done to you?’
Obviously not, but then again we wouldn’t eat grass, sleep outside or live in a field either.
Cows are animals; not people.

#getthefacts
Not our norm to go down the crossbreeding route (HE x SH) but pretty pleased with the outcome 😍
Also interesting to note given all the talk about ICBF recently that the dam of this calf is our bottom 1 star replacement cow. Think we’ll be hanging on to her for a while yet 🤗
At risk of sounding like a broken record; British Friesian cannot be beaten for superior calf quality and the ability to produce a saleable bull calf.
This little buster is less than 24 hours old and just look at him 💪🏻

We milk all year round so always share cows calving after the Spring. According to Teagasc 25% of dairy cows calve from April - June every year but if you were to look at social media you’d swear every cow calved in February. Food for thought when deciding who to follow online.
We’re 20 minutes into
#whatplanetareyouon
and the words ‘vegan’, ‘meat-free’ & ‘vegetarian’ are used in almost every sentence.
Really poor behaviour from RTE to unashamedly promote such an extreme dietary position; especially as meat and dairy standards are so high in Ireland.
A few more snaps of the dairy bulls
Yes they exist
Yes they’re well cared for
Yes they live happy lives
Yes they’re a big part of our farm

Reasons why
#Veganuary
is NOT for me:
❌ doesn’t include all food groups
❌ more expensive
❌ uncertain long term health effects
❌ many minerals/vitamins can’t be found in plants
❌ harder to source local & seasonal produce
❌ often promotes foreign foods eg avocado, quinoa
A lot of commentary on dairy bull calves at the minute.
This British Friesian bull calf was born about 6 hours ago and it’s plain to see his beefing characteristics even at this early stage, and the monetary value he has in his own right.
First set of beef twins of 2023 🎉
One bull (standing) and one heifer; quite big for twins, would have been happy with the bull as a single 💪🏻
