#onthisdayinhistory in 1986, Florence Reece passed away in Knoxville, Tennessee at 86. Reece was a Mine Workers union activist and author of "Which Side Are You On?", written after her home was ransacked by Harlan County sheriff J.H. Blair and his thugs during a 1931 strike.

#onthisdayinhistory in 1899 the New York City newsboys two-week strike began. Several rallies drew more than 5,000 newsboys, complete with speeches by strike leader Kid Blink, who was blind in one eye. The boys were successful in forcing publishers to buy back unsold papers.
