KY State Representative (HD 42), candidate for KY State Senate District 35. Youth Justice. Directly Impacted. Racial Justice.

#nomorenoknocks
Today, I filed to run for State Senate District 35. Our communities have big, urgent challenges and I’m excited to take my voice to the senate to work to end gun violence, invest in public education, and continue to advocate for Kentucky’s youth.
Kentucky's first queer rep, Rep Herron, is speaking.
"My mom said to me, I ask you to please look for a job and consider staying. Today, standing here and speaking for our LGBTQ kids and trans kids, its a reminder of why I'm needed here."
The gallery applauds.
This is happening around the country in a city daily. Today was our turn in Louisville, KY. As we hold our community tighter there must me outrage and anger. We live in a war zone and we shouldn’t have to.
It is official!!!
@FairnessCamp
@VictoryFund
First openly
#LGBTQ
person sworn into office in Kentucky General Assembly. Thank you all for your support.
State Rep.
@KeturahHerron
pointed out that "the only time that we've had a lot of people in this Capitol was when we had been taking away their rights. It was the teachers' rights; it was abortion rights; today, it's trans rights. What's it going to be next year?"
We are going to keep fighting until we get justice!!! This is the language we want “No Louisville Metro Police Department Officer shall aid, counsel or participate in the preparation and/or execution of a no-knock search warrant within the boundaries of Louisville-Jefferson Co..
Intense moments at the World Fest today as
@LMPD
SWAT walked through as they were ready for war. We must demilitarize police departments. Seeing this definitely shifted the mood and energy. So many people started asking why are they here? Did something happen?
The people of Kentucky need to be aware of the irony in passing medical marijuana today out the senate on the same day SB150 passed. They want MM to bury the anti-trans hate in the media. I hope the media and Kentuckians don’t lose sight. Free the bud & free trans lives!!
Final vote on SB 47 is 26-11, as medical marijuana bill goes to the Kentucky House. If it gets a reading there later tonight it can pass into law when legislators return after the veto period, March 30.

SB4, a version of
#BreonnasLaw
was signed today in KY. Today has been filled with many emotions. I ended the evening at the Promise Witness Remembrance exhibit.
#BreonnaTaylor
has forever changed me. I will keep applying pressure for her beautiful soul.
I walked to cast my vote, it’s gorgeous out. It was emotional as I was able to vote for so many people I know. Let’s remember whoever wins the work stays the same. Organize towards. Organize against.
I’m grateful for this opportunity to work for & with the residents of House District 42 striving to make KY a more just & equitable state for us all. Please donate to my campaign today & help me make a difference!
Special Election Alert: Tonight at our nominating meeting for HD 42 we chose
@KeturahHerron
as our nominee for the special election for the open seat created by Rep Reggie Meeks retiring. 1/4
Just left the neighborhood corner store, I let my Middle Eastern Brother know I am running for KY State Rep in HD 42. I asked if I could put a sign up. He grabbed his heart saying “I am full of joy. Whatever you need my Sister. You always come in with a pure spirit.”
#purpose
Another mass shooting in Louisville last night. There is so much to unpack. There must be the same amount of outrage and support for the Chickasaw community and those impacted. A public health approach must be the priority to curb gun violence.
"The language in this bill is disrespectful, has been very harmful and very sickening," state Rep.
@KeturahHerron
said. "...I've heard individuals say that they have been oppressed; how dare you."
Several folks sent me messages this morning saying “remember to eat.” It only made sense to stay in the neighborhood and grab
#burgerboydiner
Thank you
@DanBorsch
for keeping the people in House District 42 fed!! Go Vote!!!
State Rep.
@KeturahHerron
has been sworn in as the newest member of the Kentucky House of Representatives and will soon cast her first votes during the

Session. Congratulations, Rep. Herron, and welcome to the

Caucus!
We have been asking what happened to

"Just to be clear, ethylene glycol is antifreeze, and methanol is used like an active ingredient in rubbing alcohol," Roy said. "But to be very, very clear ... neither is safe for human consumption." They killed this sister

I remember Ms. Tamika saying everyday is March 13th for her. Many lives have forever changed due to her murder. She said she wanted to change the world and she has. We will keep fighting!!

I did a thing today!! Thank you
@ACLUofKY
for giving me the platform. And I am forever greatful for the work Angela Davis has done and continues to do.
Today ACLU-KY's
@KeturahHerron
interviewed Dr. Angela Davis about social movements to create community-based, sustainable change. Stay tuned for more information and watch the full interview at our (virtual) annual meeting on April 15, 2021.
Gun Violence Prevention Month is upon us. The first bill I filed creates an Office of Gun Violence Prevention in KY. We can’t talk about gun violence JUST through mass shootings. We must include suicide, child abuse, domestic violence, and violence in community.
The work has never been about me. But let’s get this straight..Myself and comrades are behind banning no knock warrants in Louisville. I made the call to Metro Council.
@TASullivan
drafted the first version. We sent it to MC. They took what we had and drafted the ordinance.
I was not part of the work *at all*; I just followed it
#onhere
. So, this is the first I’m hearing that Deray played a role in shaping Breonna’s Law in Louisville.
Can people who did the work give a 👍👎 on this?
We have heard there was no body camera footage. Now all of a sudden there is. Release all of the footage from this night. AG needs to also release what he presented to the grand jury. This is why we are so upset. Every damn day it’s something else.
This is Breonna Taylor's apartment the night she was killed. Did one of these officers ask "is anybody here dead" or am I tripping? Why are they confirming the address after they already kicked the door in? We need every second of bodycam footage released to the public

Congrats to the other women & thank you for listing me among giants!
I’ve worked inside a youth detention center, a mental health facility for youth, and a locked down residential facility for youth. Not 1 time did I fight the kids. We had physical restraints. To hear KY legislators say we need pepper spray and restraint chairs is ridiculous.
People asked what will I do today. I had breakfast at
#burgerboydiner
, went for a mani and pedi, then stopped to thank our poll workers. You still have four and a half hours left to cast your vote!!
The KY House passed HB3 today that would spend $39 million on incarcerating kids but not one penny on re-entry, intervention, prevention, or alternatives to detention. Public safety is a huge concern and I believe we can hold kids accountable while taking a holistic approach.
State Rep.
@KeturahHerron
said the bill's current focus is one-dimensional. "We cannot spend $39 million on incarcerating kids and not spend a penny on re-entry, on intervention, on prevention and on alternatives to detention," she said.
If we as elected officials give information about a website, we should have to name it. I’m still learning the rules but I’m not sure I feel about the lady refusing to answer that question. Leads me to belief it was a lie. Kentuckians deserve better.
Rep.
@KeturahHerron
asks Rep. Tate to share the name of the website from which she claims she ordered illegal medication abortion pills.
Rep. Tate will not answer the question and says she did not report the website to law enforcement.
The community of Louisville have been speaking out against policing in Louisville for decades.
@TheJusticeDept
just solidified what many have dealt with including myself. The next leg of the race starts today. There are many questions and we the community have the answers.
It’s super dope to get mail reminding me to vote for ME! This process has been very humbling. I am so thankful for all of the support I have gotten. This entire experience has been a win. I look forward to getting to work for the people of HD42 and all Kentuckians.
This moment is bitter sweet and I’m filled with many emotions. I am reminded by the words of Toni Morrison “I rewrite all the way to the printer. I’m never satisfied.”

it’s unfortunate to hear you, elected official making such comments..basically you are stating another person has the right to engage in a hit and run (crime) because someone is standing in the street. It’s these statements/actions that have people in the street
Two years ago today when I announced I would run in a special election to become a State Representative for HD 42. And two years later I have filed to become the next Kentucky Senator for district 35. Let’s Go!!
Today, I filed to run for State Senate District 35. Our communities have big, urgent challenges and I’m excited to take my voice to the senate to work to end gun violence, invest in public education, and continue to advocate for Kentucky’s youth.
My heart is heavy as I think about the loss of Rep. Lamin Swann on this day. I also sit here with a warm spot in heart knowing he literally was able to live his dream. Keep his family and other loved ones in your prayers. Rest up Solider and watch over us!! 💛💛
Did you see

This is white supremacy!! White Kentucky elected officials from legislators on down to county officials need to speak out against this behavior. Both sides...Democrats and Republicans....This shit ain’t a game.
Happy Pride Month!! 🌈 Today we kicked off pride by raising the progress pride flag. This year pride hits different due to the increased attacks on our community. We will continue to show up bold, brave, courageous and we won’t back down!!
To all of our LGBTQ+ people in Louisville, know that you are loved, respected, and believed in. Our city stands with you, fighting for your rights and your happiness. 🏳️⚧️🌈 Let's continue to uplift each other during Pride Month and beyond.
There are several entry points inside the jail. Don’t be fooled, the drugs are coming in from a dope dealing staffer. None of these changes address that. This is why directly impacted people need to be at the table. These fake changes won’t do anything
Proud to be endorsed by Teamsters Local 89. I want to personally thank the members of
@Teamsters89
, President Zuckerman, and Secretary Treasurer Avral Thompson.
There is so much to say and unpack. We should not be teaching or practicing judgement and hate. Middle school is the roughest age for all youth. Stop hating our LGBTQ youth.
Modern day education assignment at Christian Academy of Louisville. Middle school. Write a letter to your homosexual friend explaining why it’s wrong. Shameful.

Speaking against SRO’s in schools in KY. We must invest in mental health and other trusted adults. We are going backwards in KY.
We were able to ban no knock warrants in Louisville in 16 days. It is unfortunate the

Today is a good day to tap in and support
@Booker4KY
. We won’t back down from the rhetoric. The way KY has been ignored is violent & Kentuckians are fighting back.
Our Brothers and Sisters who are the most marginalized and have dealt with the toughest things in life are the ones to lead us. My heart and soul is broken.

Yesterday I attended the White House Convening on Gun Violence Prevention with nearly 100 lawmakers from 39 states. Addressing the gun violence epidemic requires a whole-of-government approach.
Thank you,
@RepJohnYarmuth
. I have watched your service to the people of Kentucky and I look forward to serving with the same level of dedication and commitment.
.
@KeturahHerron
has been a tireless advocate for fairness and justice, and I can't wait to see all she'll do in Frankfort. Congratulations to Kentucky's newest elected official and first out LGBTQ member in our Commonwealth's history. I know you'll make us all proud.
Let’s give full context and acknowledge KY waited two years after the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed before it took action. The nation has its eyes on KY. KY is at the center of racial injustice and police brutality. We saw protest in all 50 states and 18 countries
He, along w/ Jackie Robinson & Frank L. Stanley Jr., met with Gov Breathitt to urge passage of the bill. The Kentucky Civil Rights Act was signed into law in 1966, which Dr. King called “the strongest and most comprehensive civil rights bill passed by a southern state.” 2/2
As a Black LGBTQ woman, I am honored to have the support of
@FairnessCamp
and
@VictoryFund
. The duality of my life means I work on all fronts with an end goal of justice.
People in Louisville knew these officers lied. There is no relief knowing Officer Kelly Goodlett admitted to lies. The trauma that the Taylor family and the Louisville community face today will never go away. I believe others in the department have been aware about the lies.
A former Louisville detective pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to helping falsify a search warrant that led to the killing of Breonna Taylor.
It’s hard to find the words when our communities are terrorized on a daily by hate. My heart is heavy as I think about my
#LGBTQ
family and community in Colorado and around the world. We must denounce hate by creating a more just and fair society.
#TransDayOfRemembrance

Executing a warrant should not end with the loss of life. I am sad to learn just a few years after Breonna Taylor we are still dealing with law enforcement killing citizens. The family has questions and community has questions. Sending my condolences to the family of Omari Cryer
Law enforcement agrees: people leaving jail or prison need a valid ID upon release. This simple step would help people get back on their feet, strengthen communities and grow KY's economy. Click below to ask
@GovAndyBeshear
to start this simple program.
#LiberationIdentification
Let’s be very clear. I started the campaign
#nomorenoknocks
Even before one protest happened in Louisville. To have other Black people especially Black women to erase me from any of the work is not cool at all. To launch any campaign on no knocks without me is disrespectful..
Her: “Hey, has anyone ever told you, you look like that Congresswoman”
Me: I turn around
Her: “Oh you are the Congresswoman!!”
Me: “Hi. I’m Representative Keturah Herron. It’s nice to meet you.”
Her: “Keep doing your thang. Nice meeting you.”
🤣😂💛💛
I love my people!!!
Near the end of her first day serving in the KY House, Rep.
@KeturahHerron
recognized former Rep. Reginald Meeks, whose term she is completing. "It is an honor for the baton to be passed to me, to continue the work of service, justice and creating a better commonwealth."
#KYGA22
This is unacceptable. People should not be losing their lives while in custody of the city/state. We have had 41 days to take action. This is multi layered however leadership in Louisville need to act now.

Reflections from the 2020 budget to the 2021 budget: We have lost so much and gained little to nothing. I truly hope people realize that organizing and mobilizing are not the same. This work is not about individual people or organizations. It’s a collective.

We can not be expected just to go on. Police have too much power. At a stroke of a pen or flip of the lights they can do whatever and people are expected to just comply. This isn’t nowhere close to community safety
