Crazy idea on how to fix the DRAM supply issue: Intel should go back to their roots and become a DRAM manufacturer Get some government money due to this emergency and turn those 18A fabs into DRAM fabs

Does this make it "DOA"? Not at all Between Steam sales and the amount of money that can be saved by not paying for online, a $700 Steam Machine might still end up cheaper in the long run vs a PS5 or Xbox.

Plus unlike the consoles, Valve is using off-the-shelf parts and buying components at much lower volume than console manufacturers. Their BOM for a similar level of performance as the consoles is much higher.

There is no guaranteed revenue for Valve after you buy it, specially as Steam doesn't have paid online/subscription service like the consoles do. They have to make at least a little bit of a profit for this to make any sense financially.

Why are people expecting the Steam Machine to be priced like a console? You can... Buy it and only play Free2Play games Install Windows and buy games from Epic/GOG/etc Play pirated games Use it as an emulation box Use it as a regular mini-PC

It just occurred to me, but couldn't handhelds use foveated rendering like VR headsets? Probably would need a larger full-res render window than the 10% or so VR headsets use, but surely with a screen right in your face and an eye tracker it could work? 🤔
