Job growth is weak but does not feel recessionary. Private payroll growth low but stable for 4 months around breakeven, consumption indicators improved in July, earnings season was good, and financial conditions are getting quite easy. You could make the case this is the trough.

Gonna be fun when higher healthcare premiums hit on top of the whammy from utility bills & auto/home insurance already Key Q is spillover beyond the exchanges/govt plans Seems HC stocks at a turning point (as discussed in Cembalest this AM) but at what cost to the public?
$UNH - Margin recovery could be huge in 2026 with the average ACA preliminary rate requesting a +20-30% increase! $CI currently asking for a 35% rate increase followed by $CNC at 27%, $UNH at 26% and $OSCR at 21%. I think the market could be underestimating earnings growth

“The 3 month average job gain is now just 35k, versus the 6 month average of 81k, and the 12 month average of 128k. This is coincident with a US economy whose GDP growth was just 1.25% in the first half of 2025.” - @pboockvar

Our usage went down 10% last month Our bill went UP 20% (Unit cost jumped to 21c per kwh for some reason) From PSE&G
@KellyCNBC watching the piece on energy prices. I'm in Indianapolis my electric bill this past month was $228. We've had price increases two years ago and we're getting another one next year. It's getting insane new HVAC and Windows triple pane/UV block put in 4 yrs ago.

Yellen: I don't talk to Secretary Bessent. He has undone everything I worked on at Treasury. Bessent: "I couldn't even tell you what Secretary Yellen's China policy was, aside from consuming beer and mushrooms." via @bobdavis187

Ultimate Q: will the tariffs continue to be--and increasingly be--absorbed in foreign profit margins, or not.

Foreign exporters have so far absorbed 20% of the tariff costs.

The biggest Q in all of this...to make it "work" for both the Treasury, the stock market (i.e. corporate America) and smaller businesses, AND the consumer... Is how much foreign exporters will actually cut prices. (If less than example above, this doesn't all "work")
