BREAKING: Idaho’s Bonner General Health, the only hospital in Sandpoint, announced today it will no longer provide obstetrical services to the city of more than 9,000 people, meaning patients will have to drive 46 miles to deliver babies moving forward.
The hospital’s board of directors and senior leadership called the decision an emotional and difficult one, and cited a loss of pediatricians, changing demographics, and Idaho’s legal and political climate around health care as the reasons for the decision.

If I hear one more person say that Idaho’s ban is the strictest in the country or that it’s so anomalous because it doesn’t contain a health exception, I’m gonna lose it.
FIVE other states don’t have health exceptions. 14 have no rape/incest exception.
"The mortality rate for mothers rose 121.5%, while the rate for children rose 18%, the report found. Idaho’s maternal mortality rate in 2021 was 40.1 deaths per 100,000 births, compared to 18.1 deaths per 100,000 births in 2019."

This framing is going to get a lot of play, but it's important to read the original story, which says the 15-year-old girl wanted to keep the pregnancy and her boyfriend demanded she get an abortion and took her out of state for it.
St. Luke's responded in this story to AG Labrador's comments that were reported yesterday.
"We do not have any way of knowing who Attorney General Raul Labrador spoke to ... but what we can share with confidence is our data," the statement said.
I’d just like to say again that there are many people who want to grow their families and get pregnant very much on purpose, sometimes trying for years to do so, and cannot control when their water breaks at 20 weeks.
The ruling means Idaho’s ER physicians may now face prosecution if they perform an abortion to stabilize a patient, unless their actions qualify for the exception that states an abortion can be performed to “prevent the death of the pregnant woman.”
