Newest preprint & we think it's a big one! Young animals sleep a ton, but not with a daily pattern. What controls emergence of circadian sleep🌘? In flies we figured out WHEN and HOW. But WHY?? Sleep rhythms enable ability to make enduring memories🤯🤯

This failure leaves sleepiness unchecked. What can be done? Since we figured out the circuit basis (loss of arousal NPF/NPY), we found an NPY receptor agonist in fish has little effect on wild type but can FIX sleepiness in the mutants 🐟🤯.

Led by brilliant grad student Kyla Mace, we find loss of a synaptic cell adhesion molecule during development can cause hypersomnia in adulthood. How? A key circuit for arousal fails to wire properly.
