Newest preprint & we think it's a big one! Young animals sleep a ton, but not with a daily pattern. What controls emergence of circadian sleep🌘? In flies we figured out WHEN and HOW. But WHY?? Sleep rhythms enable ability to make enduring memories🤯🤯

In adulthood, sleep-wake rhythms are one of the most prominent behaviors under circadian control. However, during early life, sleep is spread across the 24-hour day ([1][1]–[4][2]). The mechanism...

I need people to understand how difficult it is to get an NIH grant. You spend months writing a proposal, following strict guidelines that include a detailed multiyear budget, bios of everyone on your team, plans for participant safety & ethical conduct. Then you send it off -1/n

Sleep is complex, & so was this study. Congrats to Adil @SleepSeq for finishing this project to link neural stem cells to sleep behavior. This was only possible with sleep experts @Budha, Jenny, @KayserLab & $$$ from multiple sources. Congrats all! https://t.co/kWu9q2eiGs

This failure leaves sleepiness unchecked. What can be done? Since we figured out the circuit basis (loss of arousal NPF/NPY), we found an NPY receptor agonist in fish has little effect on wild type but can FIX sleepiness in the mutants 🐟🤯

Led by brilliant grad student Kyla Mace, we find loss of a synaptic cell adhesion molecule during development can cause hypersomnia in adulthood. How? A key circuit for arousal fails to wire properly.

Check out our latest @eLife! We discover how changes to energetic demand across development govern the emergence of daily sleep patterns. Congrats to departing postdoc Amy Poe who led the work, heading to start her own lab @UArkansas in 2 weeks!!! https://t.co/H5xjn0fEOk

Behavioral and circuit analyses show that changes to energetic demand are a key driver of consolidation of daily sleep and feeding patterns as animals mature.
