Secret’s out! Yesterday, I started as the first-ever Postdoc Freer Fellow at @Ri_Science I’ll be researching past Discourses and Christmas Lectures in the lead-up to the 200th anniversary. Can’t wait to dive into the archives — partly as I doubt they’ll let me back on the roof...

Many historians thought that U.S. Navy funding of oceanography paved the way for plate tectonic theory. Historian of science and geologist @NaomiOreskes presents a different view: it was, in fact, delayed for three decades by military secrecy.

Great news: we're making Michael Faraday's notebooks available online ✍️ These writings are little known to the public, and shed light on the great natural philosopher's mind.

It was hard to keep it a secret, but here it is—my TV debut as Stern Scientist #1 in the #XmasLectures👩🔬Not sure that my physics degree was any use, but my highly scientific conclusions? Worms = tasty, baby = cute 🪱 👶 @Ri_Science

This science demonstration is over 200 years old, but we think it's still mind-blowing today 🤯 Humphry Davy first isolated the chemical element potassium right here at the Royal Institution, using electrolysis. The great natural philosopher was born #OnThisDay in 1778.

When the most appropriate form of engagement is…. no reaction. Oops.
We tried writing a clever caption for this, but all the good ones argon. Lord Rayleigh was born #OnThisDay in 1842. He was Director of the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory here at the Ri when he discovered argon. Watch the full talk with Peter Wothers: https://t.co/XYMTx2rqFF

Marie Skłodowska Curie was born #OnThisDay in 1867. When she visited the Royal Institution, along with her husband Pierre, they brought us an amazing gift: one of the first samples of radium. #Thread

A year ago I genuinely wondered if I was ever going to finish my thesis. Somehow, at the end of October, surrounded by my family and wearing fancy robes, it was all over! And, as per tradition, we got ice cream to celebrate🍦

Not your average Wednesday! Had a fantastic tour of @royalsociety today, exploring their archives. Spotted some fascinating overlaps with our collections, and the infamous fish book that almost bankrupted them 🐟I’ll be back soon!

Just two weeks at @Ri_Science and I’ve already found my favorite spot—the Mond Staircase. Once the "Sad Stair" it now shines with a chandelier that captures the beauty of atomic structure. Science, history, and art all in one space! ✨
