Today (29 October 2025) marks 100 years since the birth of Klaus Friedrich Roth. The first British winner of the #FieldsMedal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize, his discoveries in number theory established him one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.

Born in the German city of Breslau, in Lower Silesia (now Wroclaw in Poland), Roth died in Inverness, aged 90. He joined @imperialcollege in 1966 and remained there until his retirement. He was appointed a Fellow in 1999.
