the amount of *stuff* you have to do for a writing career accelerates quickly and before you know it, you have 2 full-time jobs.

the biggest takeaway from this tool should be that your publisher sees a return on their investment LONG before you earn out in most cases! My goal is to increase transparency and alleviate stress, not spread anxiety over earning out.

That's how many copies your publisher is going to try to help you sell, ideally.

Capitalism isn't our friend, but theoretically you aren't alone in the fight. It's in your publisher's interest to help you sell copies of your book. Those are copies landing in the hands of readers, in the hearts of people who will love you and remember you.

They may not be expecting you to earn out your advance, but they'll want to at least earn back your advance and recoup any costs that went into printing your book.
Honestly, for bigger pubs this may be less of an issue since they have a large list of titles...

Another small tweak: ebook and audiobook royalties are now based on net receipts, not list price, since that's a more common situation for most authors. If you want something tailored to your contract, I'd encourage you to run the numbers yourself!

Be ready to put in more than you take out.

this is all good advice, but I just want to point out that writer etiquette is extra fraught for BIPOC folks because most of us genuinely want to hold the door open and help other people through. Actually it's not just a want, it's a need. None of us can succeed on our own...
I want to talk about writer etiquette because I've seen some gross shit (particularly on Discord) over the past year. I think anyone who's been at this for a while understands, but any writers who are new to the scene, if you see these things - probably a red flag.
