Time for a COVER REVEAL!
SOMEONE YOU CAN BUILD A NEST IN out 4/2/24!
Shesheshen is a shapeshifting horror with a big problem: she's fallen for a human. She’s never connected with someone like she does with the kindly Homily…until she learns Homily is here to hunt her.
"Queer" is a great alternative to LGBT+. It's quicker to say. It doesn't relegate any identity to the other side of the plus sign. It invites all queer folks to be equal. It's cool being queer.
Black Panther postcredits scene:
Killmonger awakes in a strange hospital. He's shocked that he's alive. How did the vibranium blade miss his heart?
In a chair to his left, Ian McKellan's Magneto reads James Baldwin. He looks up, smiles, and says, "My name is Erik, too."
Cultural goal: get people to call it "Cosmic Horror" instead of "Lovecraftian Fiction." It's Portal Fantasy, not Lewisian Fiction; Epic Fantasy, not Tolkienian Fiction. Most Cosmic Horror doesn't actually read like Lovecraft. There's nothing wrong with leaving his name behind.
I'm ace.
I'm aro.
I'm disabled.
And I just won a Nebula Award.
Thank you to everyone for the kindness and support, and to my fellow writers on the ballot who wrote such amazing works. I wouldn't be here without you.
The point of a first draft is to exist. You can't edit and improve what isn't there. Thusly "internal editor" that prevents you from doing the work at all is actually an internal heckler that isn't constructive and doesn't deserve to be listened to.
Fellow chronically ill people, it is okay to feel conflicted right now as abled people celebrate returning to "normal" life. You spent a year hearing how horrible it was that they had to live a little like you, and now they are "free." Have some water. Be kind to yourself.
An important thing too many people don’t understand is that hard work paying off *is* luck. So many people bust their butts and find opportunities only to see little come of both.
There is something inexplicably hilarious to me about the Hellraiser reboot using the Law & Order logo style.
"The people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups. The police, who investigate crime, and the cenobites, who torment them for eternity."
Several newer writers recently asked me how I submit my short stories. I figure a thread is the easiest way.
Want some tips from a Nebula winner? Here they come.
Vergil said, "There in the lowest circle, frozen in a lake of his own making, is Lucifer."
Dante asked, "Who are those people frozen below him?"
Vergil answered, "Those are the web developers who decided the Pause function shouldn't work when a video is buffering."
Nazgûl: Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!
*a squad of nonbinary elves beat the crap out of him*
Nazgûl: THERE ARE ONLY TWO GEN--*muffled stomping sounds*
Cautiously continuing to wear your mask is cool, but what would be really cool is if we could normalize wearing masks any time you're sick and have to be in public. These aren't just for COVID.
Well here comes an amazing announcement:
My story "Open House on Haunted Hill" is going to be on the LeVar Burton Reads Podcast!
This is a dream come true.
@levarburton
is an icon of literacy in my life, and I can't wait to hear his voice bring 133 Poisonwood to life.
Thrilled to announce I sold a story to THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION! I have been submitting there for over a decade. One of the first SFF magazines I ever read. It's a dream market.
And boy, you will not believe the story that I have coming out there...!

BREAKING: Disney humiliates the Republican Party by announcing that Disney+ grew by 7.9 million subscribers and theme park revenues more than doubled this quarter all despite the GOP's all-out smear campaign against the company. RT IF YOU THINK THIS IS GREAT NEWS!
I'm asexual, so I'll explain pan- and bisexuality to you. Myself and people like me desire *no sex with anyone, thanks*. God balanced us out by having these nice folks who want *sex with several kinds of people, please*. They're great at it. You should get them a water.
Supervillain: My plan is the only rational way to save the human race. Many will die so that we shall survive!
Katie Porter: *brings out her white board and a marker*
Supervillain: *sweats*
Time for exciting news: I have sold a short story to

"D.I.Y." follows a disabled boy who always wanted to go to wizarding school - but his medical debt meant he couldn't afford it and they turned him down.
Now he's got a plan to change access to magic forever.
Me: I’m ace/aro.
Guy: Wait. You’re fucking queer?
Me: Actually I’m the not-fucking kind of queer.
(The rest of the conversation was not so funny, but I remain proud.)
Defunding and destroying libraries was always the Republican plan. There is no public good the government provides that they don't want to terminate. The first chance they get, they'll kill fire departments so corporations can turn disaster survival into a subscription service.
A tip for writing asexual characters in Secondary World Fantasy: *call them asexual*. Say the word. You have volcanoes with no Vulcan; you have sandals in non-sandy climates. If your book is cool, people can just say they’re ace.
The reflex to donate to a Salvation Army kettle is a kind one.
Salvation Army is a homophobic organization. Don't give to them.
But give. Every time you feel that temptation, set a dollar aside. Donate to GoFundMe for medical bills in a week and brighten somebody's day.
New story day: "D.I.Y." is now up at

Noah is a disabled boy who always wanted to go to wizarding school--but his medical debt meant he couldn't afford it and they turned him down.
Now he's got a plan to change access to magic forever.
Donating the Lamborghini to charity is a very Pope Francis move, but I'm going to spend the rest of today imagining him doing hot donuts around Vatican City.
He's known for riding in a Popemobile, but Pope Francis just received a brand-new sports car -- a sleek white Lamborghini that will be auctioned off for charity.
Today is the day. LeVar Burton narrates my story "Open House on Haunted Hill," about a lonely haunted house in search of a family willing to live in it. It's available to listen wherever you get your podcasts!

Cover reveal for my first-ever Tordotcom short story! AHHH!

As a white dude who lost two Nebula Awards last night, I want to say: Diversity makes this field better. BIPOC creators deserve *more* equity. I love reading their work, but it’s not about me. The whole field is stronger and healthier with them empowered.
Thrilled to announce I've sold a second short story to

It follows a dragon who is tired of the military's attempts to slay her--so she's running for mayor so she can call them off. Does she have your vote?
"The Three O'clock Dragon" will be out sometime next year.
I worked my whole life to get to this day. My monster has escaped into the world. SOMEONE YOU CAN BUILD A NEST IN is out now!
Shesheshen is a shapeshifting monster with a big problem: she's fallen for a human. The problem? That human is hunting her.

When ChatGPT says it's writing a story and you check four hours later and ChatGPT is scrolling TikTok and its face is covered in Dorito dust and it says you don't understand its PROCESS then it will be a real writer.
When ChatGPT writes a story WITHOUT prompts because it had a brilliant idea that morning and then spent months rewriting that brilliant idea until it was perfect and submitted it ALL BY ITSELF only to be rejected multiple times, only THEN is it true artificial intelligence.
Hateful messages aren't going to stop me from writing more queer characters. Ace people belong in Fantasy. Trans people belong in Fantasy. And if fiction can't open your heart and make you empathize with someone different from yourself, then I'm just sorry for you.
Probably the best revelation I had about publishing is that all the cool people are just people and you can talk to them like people.
Uncool people will be jerks if you talk to them like people. That is a gift, for it tells you they are not worth your time.
I'm humbled and elated to have received the Nebula Award for Best Short Story last night. I got it for "Open House on Haunted Hill," which you can read for free at

You're going to love the first thing we're working on.
My little nephew just turned six years old. He looks up to me and says he wants to be a writer someday. The last time I had a call with my agent, he shushed everybody because, "This is very important for Uncle John. He's going to be famous." 🤣🤣
Recently he asked me a favor.
Batman: There's a riot down there. Show them how tough you are.
Superman: *zips away, is back in ten minutes* Did it!
Batman: You didn't hit any of them.
Superman: They're mad that Luthor was gentrifying the city so I exposed his false records.
Batman: STOP ADDRESSING ROOT CAUSES
Hungry for more Pedro Pascal in space? Just watched PROSPECT on Netflix, where Pascal plays a terrific dirtbag highwayman trying to get the drop on people prospecting for rare minerals - on a distant new planet. It's a neat mash-up of Western and Space Opera tropes.
Nobody:
Absolutely Nobody:
Me: Here are the robots they should cast to remake Princess Bride!
R2D2 is Westley
C3PO is Buttercup
Iron Giant is Fezzik
Data as Inigo
Bender is Vizzini
Starscream is Humperdink
WALL-E as Fred Savage
Calculon as Grandpa
Unicron as Miracle Max
One of my favorite stories I've ever written is up today! "Open House on Haunted Hill" is about a haunted house that is lonely and *desperate* for someone to buy and live in it. It's up at

Thank you so much for these honors! And congratulations to my great fellow finalists!
SFWA would like to congratulate our 2021 Nebula Award Finalists! The awards will be presented on May 21st, 2022 online aboard the SFWA Airship! Please see the list here:
You might ask, "How do pansexuality and bisexuality both exist? Aren't they the same?"
I've done the research and found the answer maybe well be, "Is it your damned business or are you just devil's advocating someone else's consensual sex life?"
Afraid of negative reviews of your work? Let me share the cure:
1. Think of the best darned book you've ever read.
2. Look it up on Goodreads.
3. Click the 1-star reviews.
4. Read thoughts from people who weren't the audience, read it at the wrong time, or are just unhinged.
I finished the first draft of my novel! Just typed the words 'THE END' on the queerest, weirdest, most monstrous and heartfelt thing I've ever written.
I've just discovered that Alien: Covenant had a novelization.
Does anyone know how I might track down an original Advanced Reader Copy?
Because I really want an ARC of the Covenant.
Tonight I either win my first Nebula or lose my first Nebula. It's the first major award I've ever been up for.
People keep asking if I'm elated or nervous or on pins and needles.
Mostly? I'm just grateful you've come on this journey with me.
I have one more thing to say.
I'm disabled.
I'm asexual.
I'm aromantic.
And I was just nominated for two Nebulas in one year.
Don't let anyone tell you that your stories don't belong. This field is as much yours as anyone's.
