Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a controversial bill that establishes siting and design standards for industrial warehouses that, according to supporters, would better protect the health of residents living nearby.
latimes.com
Environmental, community and civic groups objected to the secrecy in which the bill was crafted and said it fails to hold warehouse developers to higher standards.

THREAD 1/ Today @BW published my investigation into how Yosemite, the birthplace of the national parks, has become more dangerous for people and wildlife alike on the watch of Aramark, the private contractor that runs most visitor services. Gift link:

I learned earlier this summer that Merced victims of sexual violence can't get a forensic medical exam (aka "rape kit") locally. The must drive at least 45 mins to the nearest location. During my reporting, I learned of an effort to change that. https://t.co/HZgoYhOmTW

Crucial service for sexual assault victims coming to Merced. Forensic medical exans, also known as rape kits, will be available locally

Prolonged periods of extreme heat are the deadliest forms of weather in the country. In the San Joaquin Valley, adults 65 and over account for 12% of the population but 28% of all heat-related deaths since 2020. In collaboration with @pubhealthwatch:

the way I’ve been relying exclusively on @KVPR & Instagram for fire updates in my home county… they do such a good job chasing down stories across the sprawling Central Valley that many others ignore or don’t have time for

Another example of why local media, local reporters, who care about local issues is so vital. Great reporting by @KVPR. Many layers to this that Fresno and Madera citizens should sit up and take note of!
"Whelan also declined to make Wamhoff available for an interview unless this news outlet signed an agreement that would prevent it from disclosing Wamhoff’s name, & allow him to review the story & make changes before publication. KVPR reviewed the agreement but did not sign it."

This bombshell @kvpr story by @EineKleineKerry and @cres_guez breaks a dizzying amount of news, including word that the city investigation into its embattled police chief "is not expected to find that Balderrama violated policy." 1/2
A text message reviewed by KVPR appears to show at least one Fresno City Council member was pressured to force Police Chief Paco Balderrama to resign in order to avoid legal action against the city.
