The Honest Academic Momma | Clinical Psychologist sharing the hidden curriculum for grad students | Tweets abt academia, grants, writing, publishing, & mom-ing
For academics, the weekends can be a GREAT time to get ahead.
After 10+ years in the academy, this is what I have learned!
This is what I would tell the first year grad school version of myself on how to spend the weekends!
This would have helped me A TON! ⬇️
DEAR EVERY ACADEMIC IN THE ENTIRE WORLD:
If you have something nice to say about a trainee, YOU SHOULD TELL THEM.
Their face will light up, you'll make their day, watch out...they may tear up a little.
It is ROUGH out here for trainees and a small compliment can go FAR!
For the love of everything good in this world
1 Use this time to relax
2 Go to the beach - I went to school in FL
3 Plant the seeds you've been germinating
4 Make the meal you've been pining over
5 Call ur parents
6 Facetime ur friends
7 Hug (or do something else w😉) ur partner
My hottest take all year.
Professors, instructors, teachers of any kind!
RESIST THE URGE to dunk on your students by rudely saying “it’s in the syllabus”.
Your syllabus is >20 pages long and reads like an iTunes agreement.
Your students confusion is on you. Don’t be snarky.
Hey you...Psst! It took me until I was a post-doc before I figured this out!
If you are applying to grad school, grants, or awards in the STEM field (YES that includes psych), the personal statement IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PERSONAL STATEMENT!
The directions are a red herring.
SPSS is the premier statistical software package.
In most cases it is preferable to r, SAS, and stata.
You can get pretty far with spss, YouTube, and some rudimentary code skillzzzzz.
Grad students, do yourself a favor and CONSULT A LIBRARIAN.
Are conducting a meta analysis?
Looking for data or funding?
Trying to find an interdisciplinary collaborator?
THEN CONSULT A LIBRARIAN.
These people are wicked smart and one of the most under utilized resources.
@BatesPhysio
You are very very kind. Thank you.
Honestly just knowing that I’m not alone is incredibly helpful.
And by the looks of things, it seems like I’m in good company. ☺️
I’ll feel good when I..
Get into grad school
Defend my thesis
Publish
Match for internship
Complete clinical work
Defend my dissertation
Get a fellowship
Land a TT faculty job
It literally just occurred to me that tying my happiness to academia probs isn’t the best choice.
Reviewer comments on a paper.
Reviewer 1: Please drastically shorten your introduction. It is far too lengthy.
Reviewer 2: The introduction misses important aspects of the literature. Please expand.
Starting the week off spicy with a take for grad school applicants. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
The advice that “the mentor you chose for grad school is far more important than a big-name program is to your success” is not entirely true.
We are fully into the Clinical Psychology PhD application cycle, & I'm sharing the 10 things I wish I would've known as a 1st year!
These small nuggets of wisdom were curated over a challenging & deeply rewarding graduate school experience. Feel free to add your advice too!
🧵
Discuss:
1 research questions that inspire you
2 problems you want to solve in your career
3 methods you need to learn
📓No one is going to hold you to these goals.
🤩But committees want to see that you have BIG DREAMS for yourself & that you're BRAVE enough to pursue them!
It’s the weekend. You are an academic. If you aren’t doing research what are you even doing????
I’ll go first.
Brunching with my kids.
Watching football.
Making soup.
Reading.
But most importantly…not working.
⬇️Here is what to do instead.
✍️Use the personal statement to write how your education and research experiences have supported your research questions!
📚This is what acceptance committees are looking for. And people without inside knowledge usually miss.
I woke up and immediately chose rage. So…here we go.
Hot take to start off the week.
Psych interns are so egregiously underpaid that it not only wrecks their quality of life & mental health but also (because of that fact) is an active & ongoing risk to the patients they see.
My dear dear friend. This took me YEARS to learn this.
NOMINATE YOURSELF FOR THAT AWARD.
Awards matter for promotions and positions.
Most application committees allow for self-nominations.
You wont get what you don't chase. You are worth it. Throw your hat in the ring!
Hey Clinical Psych applicants! It took me until I was a postdoc before I understood this.
When programs ask for personal statements, they DON'T ACTUALLY WANT A PERSONAL STATEMENT.
⤵️Here is what they want instead.
Okay. I’ll say the quiet part out loud.
BS Psych - 4 yrs
MEd Psych - 2 yrs
MS Psych - 2 yrs
PhD Psych - 4 yrs
Residency Psych - 1 yr
Advanced Fellowship Psych - 2 yrs
I’ll put my CV up against ANY early career physician in their last year of training.
We apologize for a recent tweet that offended our psychologist audience. Upon realizing our error, we promptly acted by deleting the tweet. We strive to maintain a respectful and inclusive environment, & we deeply regret any confusion, harm, or frustration this matter caused.
The more I think about psych internships, the more irate I become.
People forced to move across the country.
Then treating an entire caseload of patients, 40hrs/wk for $27,000/year.
SHAME
APPIC will eventually have to answer for the harm they caused patients and the field.
Can we all collectively agree that scientific journals netting billions of dollars in profits every year while refusing to compensate the researchers who did all that work feels a lot like racketeering??
🎉Huge CONGRATS to all psych intern applicants on submitting your apps!🎉
🎊You are AMAZING and have SO MUCH to be proud of!🎊
Now do you want a sneak peak of five of the most commonly asked interview questions (and some good ideas for responses)??
Check it out below!

If I could go back in time and tell the first year grad school version of myself anything it would be this…
Savor your weekends.
Fill them with friends, hikes, brunches, lunches, dinners, and cocktails.
Enjoy long conversations, sporting events, coffee shops, & sleeping in.
We love ending the week on a high note.
✅Dissertation defended.
Beyond grateful for my amazing mentor, committee members, and participants in this project.
Truly a team effort, and this project was possible because of them.
I once heard a professor say...
She changed her mindset as a reviewer FROM pointing out all the flaws, weaknesses, & problems with a paper TO intentionally highlighting ways to improve author's work.
That shift made her a better reviewer.

I am looking to grow my Twitter network! I am a sixth-year clinical psych PhD candidate (currently on internship!) studying suicide and PTSD. I tweet a lot about academia (e.g., research, writing, clinical work)! Give me a follow and we can chat!!!

This morning
@AACAP
deleted an inaccurate/misleading graphic re: training of Clinical Psychologists (PhDs) vs Psychiatrists (MDs).
Deleting that was a noble first step, yet it is not enough.
I call on AACAP to tweet a far more accurate depiction of the training of PhDs vs MDs.
Today I scheduled my dissertation defense AND received notice of funding for the LARGEST grant of my career thus far! 🎉🍾❤️👑🥳
Some days in academia are really really good. 🥰
I really don’t want to pile on here. But it’s important to discuss why this approach is short sighted and pretty selfish.
When you commit to being a “fuzzy bunny” you actively ignore oppressed and marginalized students.
You take the side of the oppressor.
1) On TT - Be the fuzzy bunny nobody wants to kick - advice my academic big sister gave me when I started on TT. These people will be voting on your future. You can be the game changer after you get tenure.

We're fully into the 2022 app cycle & I'm sharing the 10 things that I share w all my undergrads!
These unspoken nuggets of wisdom were curated over years of mentoring undergrads. Feel free to add your advice too!
💵As a graduate student, I earned $$,$$$ (FIVE FIGURES!) in grant funding for my work.
🧠It took a few years to streamline the process. But after quite a bit of trial-and-error, I figured out a system.
⬇️Here is how I did it in four (relatively) easy steps.

Hey….so….uhhhh….i just want to make sure….
Everyone is like wicked exhausted rn????
(Drop a gif with how tired you are and ill respond with a schitta creek gif)
@scheidjms
This. We had two in grad school. It was very very very hard.
Stipend didn’t even cover the cost of childcare. Let alone house, gas, food, utilities.
💔
More unsolicited research advice.
If you’re going to collect data to answer specific research questions, it is IN YOUR VERY BEST INTEREST to meet w/ a statistician BEFORE data collection starts.
They’ll tell you if you can even answer your questions using the data you collect!
Hey…Your major professor should
Respond to your emails
Return your manuscripts in a timely fashion
Invite you to lab meetings
Introduce you to new collaborators
Tell you of opportunities
Support your career goals
AT A BARE MINIMUM. None of that is too much to ask for.
While a big-name program can’t make up for a bad mentor, big-name programs are better funded, resourced, supported, & connected. They are a big name for a reason.
Get to grad school. Find the resources. Grab them by the horns. Make them your own. AND PRODUCE DELIVERABLES.
@theyoungjoo
Okay. Fair. But I’ll say this…
In the US, our overly litigious society has quite honestly turned syllabi into legal documents. We get text from legal departments every semester to add to the syllabi.
They truly are this long.
I’m not lying to you.
I propose the following change to academia!
We all get 3 lines on our CVs to put the coolest extracurricular stuff we’ve ever done.
What would yours be??
Mine:
1 Im in a

2 I take GREAT portraits of my kids.
3 I make AMAZING Turkey chili.

📚I discovered these unspoken pieces of hidden curriculum over 10+ years in academia
Dont be like me & a let a decade pass u by
Let me tell you…earning a PhD in clinical psychology is a wild ride.
Quite literally every step from applying for PhD programs to completing internship is just…a lot.
‼️Reminder to grad students, postdocs, & early career researchers‼️
You're allowed to
-take breaks
-spend time outside
-not check email
-go to a coffee shop without working
-turn off your phone
-read non-academic books
-spend time with your family, friends, & pets
✅GUILT FREE
They want a RESEARCH statement.
Programs want to know what questions, outcomes, theories, and methods drive your work.
They want to know WHAT YOU WANT TO LEARN in grad school to then apply in your research career.
I’m 1/2 through internship & feeling empowered, supported, & fulfilled at a great site
Reflecting on grad school, there were a few things that helped me match at a rigorous/competitive site - my top choice
If I compiled a list, would there be interest?

@PsychChatter
As of this morning, my grant-funded, educational app for physicians to learn about managing suicidality in outpatients has officially dropped!!!
This has been more than three years in the making.
Beyond amazed right now!
Alrighty!!! The paperwork is SIGNED, SEALED, and DELIVERED!
THRILLED to share that I’ve accepted a research post-doc with
@VUMChealth
,
@VanderbiltU
, and
@VAResearch
!
Excited to work with so many awesome scientists, researchers, and clinicians!

I honestly think there’s so much misinformation in this domain.
“Your body won’t make a baby too big to birth.”
“Your body was made for this so just trust it.”
“Women have been doing this for millennia and you can too.”
imho it isn’t disregard for risk, it’s lies.
Okay...nearly every successful academic I know has a cat. I don't have one...but I must know.
(1) How important is this to academic success?
(2) WHY ARE THEY SO ADORABLE?!
Also. Now I’m looking at you, mentors. Show up for your students and if you can’t give them 100% effort tell them to find another mentor.
It’s your job. Do it well or not at all.
☀️Go to the park.
💐Pick flowers from the farmers market.
👯♂️Grab coffee and a chat with your partner.
🌿Breathe that sweet almost summer air.
📚Read that book (No! Not the one for your research or clinical program!)
❤️Call someone you miss.
🪷And above all…rest.

Oh no!
We have taken away reproductive healthcare, maternal and infant mortality rates are higher TODAY than they were 20 yrs ago, we have no national paid maternal leave policies, and moms make less money than dads when they welcome a child.
BUT WHY DONT WOMEN WANT BABIES???
This does not augur well for our family future.
Only a minority of today’s young women w/o kids (of whom there are more & more) want to be parents someday. New
@pewresearch
:
Some jerk on the internet said that PhDs are fake doctors because “unless you can deliver babies you aren’t a real doctor.”
Good thing I kept my receipts. 😎
It is the weekend and (just as a reminder that) as an academic you need to be making the most of this time.
You should be using this time to your advantage.
Use your time wisely.

So you’ve decided to apply to Clinical Psych PhD programs. Congratulations!
Now what?
Tons of applicants wonder if reaching out to potential major professors is a good idea.
Does it grease the gears? Prime the pump? Improve your odds of an interview?
I’ll let you know here!
In a recent manuscript submission, a reviewer suggested an idea for a future manuscript using the same data.
Overall, the reviewer was super supportive of the paper we sent in. They seem super cool.
Is it unheard of to ask that the journal editor connect me with the reviewer?
🎉It's happening! New graduate students are right around the corner from the first year in their programs.
👩💻I learned these seven tips after 10+ years in academia.
🧠And I am giving them to you here for a head start in grad school!

Offending psychologists really wasn’t the issue.
Providing pretty egregiously inaccurate information was the issue.
The apology is necessary. But not sufficient.
Please issue a correct info graphic.
We apologize for a recent tweet that offended our psychologist audience. Upon realizing our error, we promptly acted by deleting the tweet. We strive to maintain a respectful and inclusive environment, & we deeply regret any confusion, harm, or frustration this matter caused.
Fastest way…
Undergrad psych - 4yrs
PsyD - 4-6yrs
Internship - 1yr
Postdoc - 1-2yrs
Clinical work is completed during the vast majority of the PsyD training (I.e., all but the 1st year) and ALL of the internship and postdoc.
@KSchaferPhD
Just curious, because as a surgeon I have no idea: what is the minimum training time to practice as a psychologist with a Psy.D? Is it 4 years bachelors, 3 year Psy.D?
I've got a few new followers here & I want to WELCOME YOU!

Today I found mine for the first time. I also cried a little. But I guess that’s kind of the point. 🥲

Huge congrats to those who matched yesterday.
And I secret word for those who didn’t…some of the realest, most legit psychologists I know didn’t match the first round.
You’ll find your spot. You’ll crush it. You’ll move on with your life.
You got this.
A few weeks ago I downloaded an epidemiological dataset (N > 40,000)
I ran some analyses & the results looked pretty weird.
When I opened up the codebook there was a glaring issue.
Psychiatric conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, OCD dx) codes were 0 = present, 1 = absent.
Welcome! New followers here! So quick intro…well…here!
I’m a postdoc fellow clinical psychologist*. I study suicide prevention and am passionate about demystifying success in academia.
I have what *I think* will be my most controversial suggestion for grad students & internship Clinical Psychology interviewees yet.
If an interview w a potential mentor, supervisor, or major professor went well & you left that meeting feeling energized, inspired, & motivated...
🎉We are heading full-speed into APPIC Internship Interview season! 🎉
Interviews are an important part of the process, but an be tricky!
And It always helps to prep for important questions.
These are the top 5 questions I was asked during
#APPIC
Interviews.
When I was in grad school, I set aside one day a month to scour the internet for awards and grants.
Anyway…I was awarded three dissertation awards, a CTSI grants, and conference, department, and university awards.
To this day, those are still highlighted on my cv.
Academia is hard. Long hours, bureaucracy, competition, and outright derision from other fields.
But there are SOME days in academia, where inspiration & gratitude flow freely.
Last month, I had one of those days.
Out of no where a former undergraduate student reached out...
🚨 Publication Alert 🚨
Very happy to have a recent manuscript accepted for publication.
In this project, we investigated the bi-directional link between PTSD and Suicidal Ideation over nearly a decade.

Ma’am. I have ten years of post secondary education (MS, MEd, PhD) and I work full time for the federal government. I can’t afford childcare, you witch.
