Unfortunately many things have turned even worse since this lecture in February 2024, with many UK institutions including Essex facing substantial deficits, and cuts to contributions and research funding in many other countries.

The Department of Government at Essex has done well since its founding 60 years ago, because it managed to create a productive research environment, making individual researchers better.
