The Nazis hated the Bauhaus. Now the AfD is picking a fight with its legacy, too. Today’s far-right parties seem to see a threat to tradition not just in contemporary culture, but also in modern art created a century ago. My piece @guardian 👇 https://t.co/zGIaiMifWp

A state parliament debate about the design movement shows how fear of ‘un-German’ ideas is being revived for the 21st century, says Katja Hoyer, a German-British historian and journalist

The tour finished with what many are agreed was the highlight: a two-hour exploration of the National Socialist Documentation Centre - a superb exhibition, the range & depth of which are astonishing. Students felt they could’ve spent longer there! @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Munich’s Justizpalast, still a court today, was hard to enter but well worth it. The exhibition, Tyranny in the Name of the German People, concisely shows Germany’s descent into dictatorship, while the White Rose courtroom’s sadness is palpable. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

We compared and contrasted the various memorials to the White Rose around the atrium of the university where the Scholls were seen dropping their pamphlets and the pavement memorial outside, key elements of Munich’s engagement with its past. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

A rainy last day in Munich punctuated by indoor visits starting with the White Rose Memorial. Thanks to the lovely staff for opening early & being so helpful. The story of the White Rose is as tragic as it is inspiring. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

All in all, it was a highly entertaining evening at the bowling alley. And there’s still another day of historical sites to look forward to. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Sadly, it’s been our last night in Munich tonight but we celebrated in style by going bowling. While skill levels varied, fun was certainly had by all. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Our tour of Nuremberg’s old town was disrupted by a downpour but the views from the Kaiserburg were spectacular and the pretzels and bratwurst maintained spirits. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

The younger students enjoyed their tour of the Rally Grounds, very capably led by Sylvia, whose passionate defence of democracy and exhortation to protect it were well received. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

The Rally Grounds and their buildings were artfully planned by Albert Speer to emphasise the party’s power and permanence. Today, their unfinished hollowness and decay is a metaphor for the rotten emptiness of their ‘ideology’. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

The older students’ tour of the Party Rally Grounds was expertly guided by Jan. Two hours flew by - almost as quickly as the group donned rainwear for the few spots of rain we had! @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Nuremberg’s Documentation Centre of National Socialism set the scene perfectly for our morning studying the rise and fall of the Nazis in “the ideological capital of the Party.” @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

At Dachau, the older students’ group saw the hard-hitting film made by the American liberators, a reminder that we must be vigilant against tyranny and barbarism. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

At Dachau Concentration Camp the message of ‘Never Again’ was brought home to all of us. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Our visit to Dachau Concentration Camp was made all the more powerful by our superb guide. Students asked excellent questions and responded to them really well, finding the Memorial poignant and truly thought-provoking. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Our walking tours of Hitler’s Munich were very engaging but both groups enjoyed a sit down every once in a while. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

On the way to our walking tour if Adolf Hitler’s Munich we saw a few of the city’s key buildings bathed in sunlight. @kingschester @TCBCSchoolTours

Perfect weather for our walking tour of Hitler’s Munich. If you wanted to avoid saluting the memorial to the 16 Nazis killed in the 1923 Munich Putsch, people would take an alternative route. ‘Dodgers’s Alley’ now has its own memorial.
