The town of Weimar gave its name to the ambitious Weimar Republic. Yet it also became a Nazi stronghold. It was a crucible of both democracy and dictatorship. My new book zooms in on this place and its people, 1919 to 1939. WEIMAR: LIFE ON THE EDGE OF CATASTROPHE May 2026 ๐๐๐

Impressions from the King's State Banquet for the German President: formality framed the event, but there was real warmth, too. I certainly enjoyed myself. I think the German delegation did, too. ZEITGEIST inside a feast fit for a king and a president ๐ https://t.co/DZBbLIhwjj

The State Banquet for the German President at Windsor was a diplomatic triumph. Black Forest cocktails, the King charming guests in German..Had a great time. Who knew when I was born in East Germany that I'd one day talk to the Queen about that? Well-themed hotel too ๐ ๐ฌ๐ง๐ฉ๐ช

Greetings from Windsor where a very excited German-British historian is looking forward to the state banquet at the castle tonight. It's the first German state visit to the UK in 27 years and I'm delighted and honoured to have been invited by the King to be there. ๐ฌ๐ง๐ค๐ฉ๐ช

Some German businesses have put out feelers toward the AfD. There's been an intense backlash, but whether behind the scenes or out in the open, many business leaders feel they can't ignore a party that tops most of the polls. My short analysis @unherd ๐ https://t.co/5ChTue8fjr

To AfD or not to AfD: that is the question many German businesses are now asking themselves. According to numerous polls, the anti-immigration Alternative fรผr Deutschland is Germanyโs most popular...

When you analyse Hitler's DNA from a bloodstained piece of the sofa on which he killed himself, you're bound to raise a few eyebrows. The media response to a documentary that did just that was intense. ZEITGEIST on what we can learn from Hitler's blood ๐ https://t.co/KciPlEhG2s

When Mozambique became independent of Portugal in the 70s, East Germany saw an opportunity. Thousands of Mozambicans studied, worked and trained in the GDR. ZEITGEIST on Workers, Students and Socialism: What remains of East German promises to Mozambique?๐ https://t.co/NlJlZrWcjV

When I said I wanted to be a historian, my dad said that's not a real job. On a work trip in sunny Portugal with enough time for some sightseeing, food sampling and people meeting, I'm beginning to think he had a point...๐

Olรก from Lisbon where the commemorations of 25 Nov 1975 have begun. That day, the military crushed a far-left coup as part of Portugal's transition to democracy. I'm told this is intensely contested history. Timely reminder that it's not just Germany grappling with such things..

A classic East German drink is egg nog served in waffle cups. In Portugal to discuss East Germany, I was introduced by my local publishers to Ginjinha tonight. That's a sour cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups. Had to be tried in the name of comparative research, of course ๐

Merz offending Brazil this week reminded me of other moments in German diplomacy: from Bismarck's hounds shredding Russian trousers to Kohl trying to warm Thatcher's heart with German cuisine. A potted history of German diplomatic blunders in ZEITGEIST๐ https://t.co/pJRndmhiNG

I've been sent to Portugal to talk about the Portuguese edition of Beyond the Wall, which came out earlier this year. Didn't need to be asked twice. Already enjoying the sun, tarts and coffee ๐๐ Olรก from the southwestern reaches of Europe ๐๐ต๐น๐ฉ๐ช

Merz's offhand remarks offended Brazil this week, Germanyโs biggest trading partner in South America. It's not the first time his impulsivity has caused an unproductive storm. Candour is great... when used with an eye to its consequences. Me @spectator๐ https://t.co/1cBVOU78Cr
