In "A Commonwealth of Hope" (currently 50% off @PrincetonUPress with promo code BLOOM50!), I share more about Augustine's virtue of hope and how his teachings can help us find hope in the face of despair. "You are hoping for the good," Augustine says. "Be what you hope for." 7/7.

Third, many people see Augustine as one of history’s great pessimists, but he's actually a great teacher of hope. He doesn't commend a hope that is the same as optimism, but a virtue of hope that helps us avoid vices of presumption & despair. It's a virtue we all need now. 6/7.

Second, Augustine knew that finding common ground could start conversations and keep them going even in the face of disagreement. He believed that persuasion is usually more effective when we engage other people on their terms rather than on our own. 5/7.

First, Augustine understood that citizens are diverse and do not need to share the same faith or ideology to be members of the earthly commonwealth. Instead, he held that citizens can unite around "common objects of love," even if they share different beliefs. 4/7.

As someone who researched Augustine for a book, I think about three aspects of his teachings that offer some context for his relevance today. 3/7.

Augustine is one of history's most influential thinkers. MLK was influenced by Augustine. Joe Biden quoted Augustine in his inaugural address, while J.D. Vance chose Augustine as his patron saint when joining the Catholic Church. Leo XIV is now the first Augustinian pope. 2/7.

Earlier this week, Pope Leo quoted one of my favorite lines from St. Augustine: "Let us live well, and the times shall be good. We are times." Augustine calls us not only to feel hope but to live it. Here's why that's significant. 🧵
