The best available estimates tell us that there are millions of people around the world being subjected to marriages that they never consented to. Yet, State responses to this fundamental human rights concern have never matched up with the scale and severity of the problem.

We set out some key messages in this press release: https://t.co/MRHB6plrzw Although all States have committed to eliminating child, early, and forced marriage, it appears that very few have translated this in their national law.

The database reveals severe shortcomings in efforts to eliminate forced marriage globally. We hope it will support meaningful conversation about what laws need to change to effectively tackle this violation that affects millions of people (mostly women and girls) around the world

Historians who care about language must stop calling "reparations" the payments made to slave owners after emancipation. Reparations are about redress past wrongs. What Haiti paid to France in 1825 was a RANSOM of 150 million francs. Ransom was also what was paid to all slave

In 1934, the US recognized tribal governments with constitutions. Tribes have been ingenious, despite colonialism. Until now, we lacked a comprehensive database of those constitutions. Thanks to @efieldingd and @bethredbird (and NSF funding) we have one! https://t.co/XA2N1x9f8H
