Some personal news: I am beyond thrilled to share that I’ve sold a book proposal tentatively titled, HOW TO FIND YOUR PEOPLE: A Guide to the Transformative Power of Community. It will be published by Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

My lofty goal for this book is to ignite a public conversation that reimagines solutions for how we currently talk about loneliness and a host of related crises. I want to build a movement of Americans committed to community-filled lives.

The book will be a prescriptive nonfiction about how to be a part of communities where people care for each other....

If the amount of time, effort, discipline and coordination that went into children’s swim meets went into electing Democrats, pretty sure we’d be living in a very different country

While the U.S. economy seems to have dodged a recession, many families are struggling without reliable, affordable childcare.

you don't want to risk damaging the relationship by asking too often. What if every single day you had to cobble together how to find internet from all of these sources just to do your job and provide for your family?

Maybe you could work from your car for an hour outside the library, but sometimes the lot is too full when you get there. Sometimes you could go to a friend or family member's house and use theirs, but because the broadband is so precious...

There were years-long waiting lists to get it, and its cost was so high you aren't sure how you'd afford it even if you got off the waitlist. You could hot spot sometimes, for a few hours at a time, but it's compromised and not reliable....

Here's the analogy that's part of my latest op-ed for TIME. "So for those who still aren’t quite getting this pain, here’s an analogy. Imagine if much of the country didn't have reliable internet.

Economists love to talk in macro terms, and those discussions often ignore the real economic pain of families. We appear to have dodged a recession, but that doesn't mean "all is well.

@SubstackInc I have thought about this long and hard. Substack is by no means perfect, but after a lot of careful consideration, I think this is the right decision for me. I believe what I do is valuable. I want it to reach more people. I want to earn more money for it.

@SubstackInc So I'm now taking the risk of asking my existing members to stick with me by taking a few extra steps to sign up again with their credit cards on Substack. This feels scary since I can’t predict how long it will take to reach the same revenue level I’m at now.

@SubstackInc However, without the powerful recommendation and marketing tools I see available on Substack, I’ve concluded that on Ghost, I had plateaued on my total paying members as there’s an expected churn of people who drop off.

@SubstackInc Over 2023, I put in efforts to grow my newsletter on Ghost. I did content swaps with great writers and targeted member appeals, which modestly increased my revenue and subscriber base. Last year, The Double Shift provided about a third of my income.

For quite a while, I’ve felt like @SubstackInc was a very fun party where so many of my professional peers were hanging out, cheering each other on, doing great work, and getting LOTS of subscribers in the process. I’ve felt left out.
