Citywide tenant union, organizing to ensure that every Kansas Citian has a safe, accessible, and truly affordable home đź’Ą #HouseThePeople

Solidarity is a verb. The @kctenants We Feed Us campaign is in its third week. We packed 500 grocery boxes of meat, milk, bread, cheese, and fresh produce that will feed 2500 union leaders and their families. Step up, lock in, do it again until we win.

It’s through moments like this that our union grows, our leaders develop new skills, and we agitate in public about the conditions we cannot accept. 🎥 @CinemarxismBret

We see WE SEE THIS as both an urgent measure to meet material needs, and as a structure test, or a test of our union’s ability to build what we need, to use the power we’ve assembled. The union as a vehicle for strategy, for politics, and for care.

WE FEED US is a survival program— one that builds on a long history of such programs, including in our own union. This isn’t the first time we’ve had to step up for our people, and it won’t be the last.

THE UNION STEPS UP WHEN THE GOVERNMENT WON’T The government is back open, but our people are still hurting. We will continue WE FEED US through the end of the month to make sure our union members are as stable as possible on the other side of this catastrophe.
When @KCTenants heard that SNAP benefits would be delayed as a result of the government shutdown, they jumped into action. WE FEED US is a survival program in the spirit of the Black Panthers, and like the Panthers, KC Tenants is agitating to win much bigger fights.

On Saturday @KCTenants launched Operation Egg. Union members get eggs sourced from local farmers for $3.50/dozen, or free, via solidarity donations from other members. No mark up, not a fundraiser, just an offering. The tenant union is a vehicle for strategy, politics, and care.

On Friday I joined striking tenants from the Quality Hill Towers Tenant Union to call on federal regulators to come see the horrid conditions these tenants are living in. 🧵

If FHFA and Fannie Mae cannot meet these terms by COB today, the bargaining teams may vote to cancel the engagement. Since this engagement will not include the FHFA Director, this does NOT constitute bargaining. As such, the Kansas City strikes will continue.

The federal regulator is cordially invited to sleepover at Quality Hill Towers or Independence Towers.
The bargaining teams repping the unions on strike chose to accept the Nov 8 offer on the following terms: ‼️FHFA confirms participants by COB Nov 1, answers questions about the landlords’ financials by Nov 4 ‼️FHFA/Fannie execs spend a night at the properties during the visit

On October 30, TUF shared our terms for bargaining. On October 31, after extensive back-and-forth, FHFA retracted their offer in favor of a one-hour meeting in Kansas City on November 8, without the FHFA Director Sandra Thompson.

please learn more about @KCTenants. I've had this screenshot from one of their writeups saved on my desktop for over a year and a half now and it consistently pushes me to remember that we are the only ones coming to save us. and that we will.
"All of us are paying more rent than we've ever paid before for worse conditions than we've ever endured. -@taraghuveer to Caleb Hearon. Tara is the Director of @KCTenants, who are on a historic rent strike demanding a 3% rent increase cap in federally funded buildings.
