City of Atlanta and areas NW/West/South/East are in the clear for today. Any rain that falls will be regular rain. NE Atlanta suburbs should rise above freezing over the next couple hours if they haven’t already. Gainesville and points NE will likely stay around freezing.

My lord
Jaw-dropping scenes of a crippling #icestorm with 1-2 inches of ice accretion from thunder freezing rain has strained the power infrastructure. You can see how these trees under the weight of the ice are a major threat to life and property. Much needed shelter in place order in

I respect all of our broadcast and NWS meteorologists *however* we can’t be mad at the general public for a lack of trust when one TV station has 1” of ice accumulation south of Atlanta and NWS barely had a 0.10” of ice. Hint? The NWS forecast will likely best verify!

Remember that you need temps at least 32F or colder for freezing rain on the surfaces. Yes, 33 or 34F is cold, quit cold, but that would make a very cold rain, NOT freezing rain.

Warmer air is on its way now for Atlanta southward. CAD will likely remain over NE GA (especially north of Gainesville) for most of the day.

As bad as some may have it in GA, be thankful it’s not this level of bad. Absolutely horrible conditions in parts of Mississippi.
We woke up to an ice storm apocalypse in Oxford, Mississippi this morning after hours of thunder freezing rain. Power flashes lighting up the sky, stranded motorists, trees falling on cars and homes under the weight of over an inch of ice accretion. Coverage for @accuweather

Whew, I’m definitely over talking/discussing/forecasting this mess of a winter storm. We have the rest of today to get through!

Received a glaze of ice down here in Locust Grove. Nothing too bad as we sit at exactly 30F waiting for the warmer air to arrive. Send any pics if you have them!

I’m closely monitoring temps later today as the line of heavier precip enters GA. Areas from Atlanta west/south should be fine as temps rise into the 40s when moisture arrives. NE GA is a wildcard. If temps are off by 5 degrees, that may still be freezing rain by afternoon.

Most of us North GA is done with round 1 as we sit below freezing. Outside of possibly NE GA, we will rise above freezing into the afternoon. This will set the stage for round 2. Round 2 will be line of very heavy rain, maybe some t-storms in Central/ southern GA.

Gwinnett County also sits at a higher elevation than Charlotte/Mecklenburg County.
@joshuawx_ CAD is crazy bc how did Gwinnett County get more snow than South Mecklenburg? (Charlotte)

[ 3 AM Sun. Update ] As of an hour ago, an official observation at Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL Airport) reported light freezing rain (-FZRA, for the weather nerds). We're seeing more reports of freezing rain & accumulating ice across metro Atlanta, including in the city itself. #gawx

Already getting dry slotted south of I-20. We are sitting at 35F and it’s 3am. We were supposed to be at or below freezing by now. Overall south metro will be fine, just a cold rain later today. Freezing rain/ice confining especially NE of Atlanta as expected. Good night!

39F in Southern Henry County. For context, we were expected to start seeing freezing rain around this timeframe. This is the case for many south of I-20. Some of us may hit 32F but we’ll rise back toward the 40s around 9-10am. Seeing freezing rain reports in NE Atlanta suburbs!

The 2/12/14 event tricked down from the mountains in cold air damming fashion but extended well beyond the northern suburbs. Im speaking eastern Atlanta suburbs, Athens, Augusta, etc. The I-20 corridor. The 1/2004 ice storm was similar. This event isn’t any of those.

The big question was how deep and widespread would this cold air damming be? Typical cold air damming episodes during winter trickle down from the mountains (12/2002, 12/2005). Less impact in Atlanta. Then you have the 2/12/14 storm. Way deeper. This looks to be more the former!
