Brilliant thread on social and psychosocial determinants of obesity from @jburnmurdoch . Blaming individuals doesn't work, quite apart from its unacceptability.
NEW: a column in the Times argues that the only way to tackle obesity is through fat shaming (yes, you read that right). It’s an astonishing argument to make, and unsurprisingly it falls to pieces under scrutiny. Let’s take a look, and see if we can do better:

Oh, and for the "it’s just personal responsibility" crowd, an anecdote: I worked nights (10p-7a) at local supermarket for a few months between school & university, and my diet, exercise & weight all took a hit. Over the months after leaving that job, I got back onto an even keel

@JuneF_sa Are eGFR-cr values calculated from CKD -EPI equations developed in non-African populations really appropriate for defining CKD prevalence (according a fixed non-age adapted eGFR threshold) in an African population. Probably not.

And to the second, agree we have limited understanding of the impacts of AKI from infectious diseases and heat stress. Schistosomiasis is endemic, and malaria seasonal, with high HIV prevalence. Planning to unpack in future studies

Good points, to the first. We underestimate CKD based on creatine eGFR so we know we are missing people using the <60 cut offs, plus those with severe CKD die in the absence of RRT in this rural community

Can attest to this...everyday is see municipal workers fixing water leaks, repairing tar, picking up rubbish...thank @mphophalatse1 and @CityofJoburgZA for reigniting hope in Jozi again. good governance is possible

Perpetuating a narrative that absolves South Africans from taking any responsibility for any of this mess. We also seem to have a very short memory...... what about all our neighbors who protected ANC activists when they fled for their lives out of SA
MEC Phophi Ramathuba’s dehumanising rant to a Zimbabwean patient is a distraction from the root issue: that the ANC never acted on the implementation of strategic frameworks to regulate cross-border healthcare agreements back in 1994.
