Through “Growing Up in Malawi”, we hope to spark conversations on maternal & child health in Malawi and highlight the importance of longitudinal studies in improving public health outcomes. Join us in celebrating these stories!.

By following these families, we aim to explore how maternal health, parental mental health, and environmental factors affect infant development. The stories add a human face to our research, helping us understand the roots of long-term health conditions.

The documentary co-creates storylines with the families, blending footage from Malawian filmmakers, MEIRU field staff, and the families themselves. This gives a deeply personal look at their experiences—capturing both the challenges and joys of new motherhood. #GrowingUpInMalawi

It's LAUNCH DAY! Today, we’re releasing the first episode of "Growing Up in Malawi", a documentary capturing the journeys of 20 families as they navigate pregnancy and early childhood. Co-produced with local filmmakers and our #GenerationMalawi cohort mothers and their families!

Women experiencing high under-five mortality and women living away from tarmac road experience high birth rates.

Our results show that Total Fertility Rate has been declining from 6.4 (6.0-7.0) in 2005-2007 to 4.6 (4.3-4.9) in 2020-22.Our descriptive analysis show that sharp fertility rate declines have been observed in age specific fertility rates and in fertility rates by education status.
