these faces should haunt your dreams.
I'm trying not to overanalyze, but there is a similar jacket on several of the children photographed (presumably to make them look older?) and scuff marks around the shoulders.
Yesterday Chinese officials contacted to let us know that our children have illegal dual citizenship. For my son, due to a retroactively applied policy: even though he is U.S.-born with a U.S. passport, his father is Chinese and so the Chinese authorities decide he is Chinese.
My outfit of choice to visit the Chinese Embassy.
Extravagant, impressive, vast spaces don’t make up for the crimes of the Chinese Communist Party including the ongoing
#UyghurGenocide
, brutal assaults and stripping of freedoms in Hong Kong, cultural genocide in Tibet, and more
Not a mention of Uyghurs or genocide.
This is how history repeats. These people sit at the feet of a genocidal dictator. The arrangement of the room, even going to Beijing....catastrophic mistakes in how to "engage" with China.
Remember how
#China
hosted the
@Olympics

@nbc

@Disney
filmed Mulan a short distance from facilities like where this child was photographed?
I'm not forgetting.
Can't believe we are coming up on 1 yr since the

Faces that still haunt. Tell me why we are still believing that we can have a "thaw" in U.S.-China relations while close to a million
#Uyghur
children have been ripped from their families?
BREAKING NEWS: Chinese international student caught on video ripping down posters supporting Hong Kong democracy and criticizing Chinese dictatorship at University of Queensland Lennon Wall, laughs about Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps and denies Tiananmen Massacre
While the
@DeputySecState
@ClimateEnvoy
& others might be begging for "engagement", the Chinese authorities are (justifiably) reading this type of begging & posturing as weakness. They are amping up efforts to intimidate and harass.
I'd like to state a simple fact: the Chinese authorities have no jurisdiction over my choice as a U.S. citizen to work with nonprofit organizations on human rights.
Normalizing harassment & transnational repression of any form against anyone is unacceptable.
My daughter was born just last year here in the United States. The timing of gathering information and informing of this is quite obvious.
I'm done staying quiet about ANY attempt to contact/inquire about me or my children.

I lost all hope for China on some days. Only those who really know the country will understand how significant it is to have someone shout "We don't need to be afraid."
Would also highlight that every single
#Uyghur
person who views these photos is imagining the face of their loved one. For those who have family missing in the camps, this report is not just breaking, it's beyond heartbreaking. No words to express the pain they may feel.

The CCP should not be considered mere "competitors". Nor can we have true cooperation with them. Barbaric is the only word left for those in power in China.
Chinese authorities who are harassing & punishing my

I am thinking of them, and because I am will never ever shut up.

Tesla's Musk meets Chinese foreign minister, who calls for 'mutual respect' in US-China relations
Respect to a regime that is holding innocent people hostage and committing genocide? No thanks.
@elonmusk
is evil for legitimizing this.
The best way for the US and China to improve their relationship is people-to-people exchange. It was an amazing experience traveling back to China as an American in 2023, Chinese people are the same as before: warm, welcoming, hospitable. The Chinese love having foreign visitors

Pakistani contact living in China messages me to lecture me on how I should be speaking out on all atrocities (i.e. Palestine etc) not just Uyghurs while meanwhile not speaking out on any.
Not well received by me this morning. Fed up with all the hypocrisy.
This book made me cry more than any other book that I've read in the last 5 years.
Moving, tragically poetic masterpiece that touched my heart and soul.

My mother-in-law in China has been begging my husband to tell me to stop, and informing him that he shouldn’t follow my example.
We never spoke to her about my work. It’s clear what’s happening but as painful as it is, we won’t stop.
For so many in the Uyghur community who have been terrorized by the Chinese State, there is an abundance of sympathy for Jewish victims of terror.
We should strive to make those voices louder than the voices of hate that don't represent us.
Honestly livid. There has been no accountability for the Chinese government's ongoing acts of transnational repression against Uyghur Americans & others from the USG. Now with the new anti-espionage "law" & this attempt for extraterritorial application of the NSL in Hong…
I really hate to say it, but I was right. This trip was not just ineffective, it is harmful. It is complicity.
I am equally frustrated with the activist community. We are too hesitant to attack recently. No more mincing words.

On China’s development: An American friend asked me: what kind of flower will grow out of China? My answer is: it will be a flower of peace, cooperation, and common development. It will be a Chinese peony, as beautiful and sweet as roses.
Call me "hawkish" but I don't think that a "government" engaged in this type of behavior is capable of "responsible competition".
As you will see in the article, my personal experience does inform this stance.
I will not accept that my position is "extreme" because I think "engagement" for engagement's sake against a backdrop of genocide is, 1) in bad taste and 2) not going to produce results on anything.
You know what is an extreme position? Whitewashing genocide.

Some days, yes, I wish I had never spoken publicly. I wish I had never sacrificed my family, my mental health, my time, & my heart.
But I know it’s a fleshly response. Even if the whole world turned against me, to condemn the CCP was the right thing to do & a moral obligation.

The
#CCP
has given ample demonstration of its true character, will the world respond at last?
It's not controversial to stand by this flag.
Someday the CCP will fall. In order to ensure a free future for the Uyghur people, we need to move forward with integrity. A nation is built with self-sacrificial leadership.
Russia’s rights of membership in the UN Human Rights Council has just been suspended. War criminals have no place in UN bodies aimed at protecting human rights. Grateful to all member states which supported the relevant UNGA resolution and chose the right side of history.

That's who we are up against. A regime characterized by a lack of regard for human life, and for innocence.
There is a sense of disbelief amongst human rights activists today. A genocidal ruler being greeted with a smile on U.S. soil is sickening. Beyond the struggles we already face as a nation, this feels like the nail in a coffin somehow.
But the fight for justice doesn't end today

Uyghurs & members of other groups in Xinjiang have suffered unspeakable oppression at the hands of the PRC authoritarian government. The PRC has engaged in human rights violations & abuses that shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences.

As the Chinese regime shows signs of easing excessive "Covid" restrictions, we should remember:
1) There are no signs of releasing
#Uyghurs
from concentration camps, prison, & enslavement.
2) A few concessions to keep the population quiet doesn't indicate sustained policy shift
It’s incredibly heavy to be here at the

We can't forget about what is happening in Tigray.
Appalling, & as is characteristic of our present foreign policy, not enough is being done proactively to intervene in this genocide.
This is what happens to thousands of children in Tigray, Ethiopia's IDP centres.
Severely malnourished, left to fend for themselves. Many of these people have lost hope, children and adults are waiting to die because of deep famine.

Yet another reason that
@SecBlinken

While messaging to China is important & was disastrously bad, it also paved the way for others to take a similar deferential approach to a genocidal dictator. As the U.S. hasn't done…
I am sharing this publicly because I am pissed. I haven't spoken much about the specifics of our own family's harassment by the

If I get invited to 1 more conference where 95% of the speakers are white men talking about China I might scream. No offense to the wonderful white men I know. Where are Uyghur panelists? Chinese? Tibetans? Those w/firsthand knowledge? Oh, their views may not be "nuanced" enough.
My children are also Chinese. And I don’t want them to live in a world where we can’t call out genocide because it will “provoke” the perpetrators.
I don’t want them to be the target of racism. But I also know that the most racist entity on earth is the
#CCP
Important to remember as there is much hurt in the
#Uyghur
community over this...
It's the number one question Uyghur activists are asked too...why the silence from the Muslim-majority countries? Remember that they are often likewise under authoritarian-style governance as well.
Abbas, an unelected president who has been forcing himself on us Palestinians for 18 years, does not represent the 80% of Palestinians who support the Uyghurs. We stand with the Uyghurs against Abbas and China.
