My introduction to the English major course has the most students in it I've ever seen. So many new English majors. I'm excited to induct more nerds into the club.

(okay, 4/4) which developed separately because of classism embedded in the bifurcation of genre & publishing ecosystems. We've forgotten the roots, & now just have two systems with two very different sets of norms regarding pay & more. I've published in both & love both, btw.

3/3 operating as career & prestige builders, assuming no one is making their living as an artist. While the sff mags, evolving out of the pulps which assumed that writers were trying to make a living, have inherited & built upon that value system. Thus, we now have two systems. .

2/3 when the pulps (the roots of our current sff mag ecosystem) were treated (wrongly) as low class and the glossies as "literary." The glossies have almost entirely died off, lit mags took their place, but hosted largely by universities or individuals, without a revenue stream.

(Thread) This is one of my areas of research, and its fascinating, in my opinion! This is the norm for pro sff magazines, the disconnect regarding money between lit mags and sff mags evolved out of the bifurcation between the pulps and the glossies early in the 20th century 1/3.

Today I interviewed Neil Clarke, Founder of sci-fi mag @clarkesworld. This is a paying market that is open year-round and does not charge fees. No fees and paying writers is the norm with sci-fi magazines. Why? Because writers not only refuse to pay fees, they collectively.

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Custodians of Wonder by Eliot Stein. This non-fiction book is a fascinating showcase of the human potential for innovation & beauty, following the author on several journeys to meet people who are keeping old traditions alive. #purrfectreads

Fidil is so cute I sometimes suspect that he was cooked up in a lab just to be extra adorable.

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Make Your Way Home by Carrie R. Moore ( @Tin_House). These short stories are at once heartbreaking & gorgeously written, deeply real & occasionally surreal in service of emotional truth. I devoured it. #purrfectreads #shortstories

People seem determined to make the entire world implode. Yet at the same time, this selkie novella is going really well. Its odd to have my art making thriving even as the world burns. Yet, what is art for, if not to give us solace in the dark?.

Fidil is in the hospital, he won't eat, and they aren't sure why. Either an infection, or maybe he ate something he shouldn't have AGAIN. Inconclusive x-rays, they are keeping him for 24 hours, to see if surgery is needed. Keep my sweet silly baby in your thoughts.
