Australia has relatively high state capacity. That is, our administrative state is unusually effective. This deserves study, but I was surprised to find that very little had been directly written on the topic. So the economist Peter Bowers and I produced a literature review.🧵

Is the explanation for this just that there can be greater capital deepening in a sector like agriculture?.

@JosephNWalker On farm productivity growth - especially in crop farming - has outpaced the rest of the economy for ages. 1) What does everyone else do all day? . 2) What can everyone else learn from farmers?.

Does anyone know of a great summary / syllabus of the best papers from the urban agglomeration economies literature?. I'd expect to see, for eg, Marshall (1920), Ganong & Shoag (2017), Glaeser, Duranton & Puga, etc. (@s8mb, @MTabarrok, @mnolangray, @1finaleffort tagging you in.

New episode with Francis Fukuyama (@FukuyamaFrancis). While The End of History and the Last Man is arguably the most influential work in political science of the past half-century, I wanted to focus on one of Frank's lesser-known books: Our Posthuman Future. In that book, he

My problem with Kindles, iPads, e-readers. When I'm reading a book or a PDF, I jump around a lot. I like to, e.g., flip to the index to see if the author treats a particular idea that's just occurred to me; turn back a few pages to remind myself of something; grasp the structure.

*Of course, TFP is not the main or only metric by which the CSIRO should be judged. But it seems relevant.

If the CSIRO closed down tomorrow, how would that impact Australia's TFP* over the next, say, 10 years?. There's a good chance that closing it down would *raise* TFP, by moving more researchers into the private sector, where they might be more productive. Why am I wrong?.
