- what a beautiful song you've written.

On this day, in 1982, Mr Stephen Sondheim wrote to Howard Ashman, in regards to his little Off-Broadway musical he wrote with Alan Menken. Suffice to say, he was a fan.
Whenever theatres open again, at bang on 7:30pm, I think all the musicals in town should have their orchestras perform an overture which encompasses every single show in town. Let’s call it the ‘Back in Business Overture’
I would like to direct a production of The Last 5 Years, where the Jamie character is played by a woman and the Cathy character is played by a man. Who’s in?
If the general snubbing of TICK, TICK… BOOM! and WEST SIDE STORY at the BAFTA’s says anything about the UK’s perception of quality musical theatre, I don’t know what does.
Following from the success of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, I’m looking forward to tick, tick… BOOM! at the Moondance Diner, Amélie at the Two Windmills Café, Moulin Rouge at the Moulin Rouge and The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the Ruins of the Notre-Dame de Paris.
Dear company,
Due to new coronavirus regulations, cast will have to provide their own pencils to mark their scores/scripts, and not borrow from the Assistant MD.
Kind regards,
Musical Directors.

Musicals that ‘feel’ like plays. Where the songs seep in and out delicately. For example, Fun Home, The Band’s Visit, A Man of No Importance…
Any others?
DREAMS COME TRUE, PEOPLE!
I’ll be making my West End debut as Associate Musical Director for
@cityofangelsLDN
, running at the Garrick, March 5th thru Sept 5th.
When you say you want theatre back by Christmas, PLEASE don’t announce on the 23rd of December theatres can reopen without social distancing, hoping to see a panto on Boxing Day.
I'm looking for 10 amazing singers who are up for learning a song from
#ArmchairMusical
to pitch for
#BEAM2023
.
Working class artist here. I don't have the funds to pay for this, so I am genuinely looking for people who wanna do this for the love of new MT. Anyone interested?
Tonight would have been closing night for
@cityofangelsLDN
, after just 10 previews (we didn’t even get to open before Rona struck her mighty hand!) Here’s praying that we get to do it again some day.
So proud to share with you all that The Boy Who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair will be having its world premiere as part of the
@NYMTuk
’s 2023 Season.
I’m so grateful for the NYMT’s support of the show, and to be included in a season of two stellar classics of the genre.
Well, this is a first for me!
Channelling the spirit of Marin Nixon, it was a pleasure to be Susan Fay’s ghost singer for a few shows, whilst doing some MD’ing... A pretty niche situation (illness, no covers etc) but I’m glad she’s back in good health & singing up a storm again!
I’ll escape now from that world.
From the world of Jean Valjean
There is nowhere I can turn.
There is no way to go ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon.
Dreams come true folks.
So excited to be conducting the West End premiere of this seminal musical of the 21st Century, in a concert presentation next month at
@LondonPalladium
produced by Jambert Lackson.
Time to get my fuckity fuckity fuckity fuckity fuck-you dress on!
Musical directors in the off west end/fringe work so god damn hard. They have to be supervisors, copyists, arrangers, orchestrators, vocal arrangers, dance arrangers, fixers, orchestral managers, vocal coaches, musical dramaturges, pianists and conductors. The whole music dept.
I consider myself lucky that I had the opportunity to conduct ‘City of Angels’ during our cut-short preview period. Though it’s now just dawned on me, and I say this very tentatively, that I may have been the youngest person to conduct a west end show (or one of the youngest).
How about an Online Virtual Queue System for open calls?
You book a place and you’re given a time slot. No more getting up at an ungodly hour. No more excruciating waits. And no more being told after said wait that they’re not seeing any more people. Thoughts?

at Manchester Cathedral.
We’re looking for amazing performers & musicians for all of the shows in this epic, COVID secure season, as well as stellar choristers, just for Hunchback.
Get self-taping!
Exclusive: West End venue the Playhouse Theatre is to be transformed into an in-the-round space to host the forthcoming immersive production of Cabaret starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley
@NYMTuk
Hunchback - where do I begin?
If this production shows anything, it shows that young people can do ANYTHING, no matter how hard or difficult the circumstances. These guys are a testament to the power of theatre & proof we can be more inclusive & embracing of all artists.
Bravo to Music Man for listing the Broadway musicians playing in the pit outside the theater where everyone can see. This should be the norm with every show.
MUSICAL DIRECTORS/PIANISTS: Given the current situation, I think it would be fab if we all carried cloths/wipes to wipe down piano keys prior and after use. Seeing as there’s so many pianos at so many venues probably have never been cleaned, it’s a small step!
Thank you, Stephen, for everything you gave to the art of the musical theater. Thank you for your teachings, for your passion, wit and courage.
Everything you did, you let it come from you. You gave us something new. You gave us more to see.

deleting my dating apps cuz i wanna meet someone the old fashioned way (being aloof and stating that I am not in love while a Greek chorus of gospel muses tell me otherwise)

In my vocal warm up, we always sing a verse of ‘Over The Rainbow’. Not that you asked, but here’s why:
1 - it’s the greatest melody ever written (thanks, Harold Arlen)
2 - to invite the ghosts of theatre past, to walk alongside us thru the next show/rehearsal
3 - for Judy
Today’s a big day for me as a writer. I’ve signed my first option on a novel to adapt into a musical.
More workshops to come, & a production next year… very exciting times ahead.
Huge thanks to my agent,
@SimpsonLarah
, for helping make this a reality.
Dreams really do come true!
I’ll be making my UK Touring debut as Musical Director for Here You Come Again, running at Leeds Playhouse next month before touring the country through to the end of the year.
It’s this moment right here. When the two younger Fiona’s re-emerge and they all sing in harmony, that’s when I get the shivers down the spine. It’s moment like this I wish I could experience the song again without knowing what’s going to happen.
I’m so sad for all my friends who have lost work left right and centre. I wish to win the lottery tomorrow and throw you all shit tons of money. But sadly, I am not rich in that sense. However, if you need advice, need a song, need a cut of a song, my DM’s are wide open.
The first (and only) night I conducted City of Angels was also the day Broadway went dark. Never would any of us thought both Broadway and the West End would both still be dark in August...
Looks like the rabbit is finally out of the hat… or should I say, crane.
So proud and honoured to share with you all that I am adapting
@LaraWilliamson
’s beautiful novel, The Boy Who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair, into a musical.
I’d really like to do a production of something with a full Asian cast and creative team. Maybe Pacific Overtures? Maybe Allegiance? Anything! Just once in my life. Thanks.
DREAMS COME TRUE 🧙♀️ 💚
I am beyond excited to announce my directorial debut, with the Off-West End premiere of Wicked at Southwark Playhouse Elephant.
The past two days have been a little bit of a whirlwind. After a year of no MD’ing work, two jobs ended up on my lap.
Please forgive my boasting. I’m quite excited!
Thrilled to be music directing the 2023 China Tour of
