PTSD is real. ADHD is real. There is nothing wrong with medicine. But people do self-medicate. People wrongly self-diagnosis. Society has tried to put all of life into the counseling room. It won't fit. Life is just too complicated for that.

There are a lot of helpful subtweets about how bad this teaching is. But as a preacher I'm also reminded that we need less dichtomies and more nuance in the pulpit. It's hardly either/or and almost always both/and. 1/2

I think Josh’s critique that evangelicals catering to the left could be a disproportional reaction to the flaws of the right. But the idea that the right doesn’t have its own deadly over reaction to the left is foolish.

4. The book “The Coddling of the American Mind” is helpful here. One of the fallacies in our culture is “Us vs Them.” It has created a damaging polarization where Newton’s law is over turned. It’s not an equal reaction to the other side; it’s a disproportional reaction.

It’s also doesn’t take into account the landscape of the church. When evangelical leaders criticize the right or left politically - they often do so within the context of the church. And I’m not sure you can make the case that evangelicalism is predominantly going left.

3. Josh points out a lot of studies about the secular and progressive left influencing the next generation and I agree. But I don’t think this gives an accurate picture. This downplays the influence of people like Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, and Donald Trump.

Keller rightly notes that the gospel isn’t something that toes the line between the right and the left; it is something different. Theologically going left or right is deadly no matter how much sway legalism/license has over the church, b/c they both lead you away from Jesus.

2. I’m sympathetic to his critique that in an effort to criticize the right some of evangelicalism has catered to the left. However, I’d push back on his “step 2” and say the right and left are equally dangerous!.

1. Josh should have made a distinction between left and right theologically and not just politically. Keller often went after legalism (right) and license (left), and those don’t always line up for democrats and republicans.

Seems to me 2 things can be true at once: A Secular atheist can still speak truth, b/c all truth is God’s truth. Also, there can be legitimate concern that Christian nationalism will be construed with the entire American church. Fair? @SkyeJethani @philvischer @kkdumez @drmoore.
