Most transformation efforts fail. Major new research from @BainandCompany says only 12% of big change programmes produce lasting results. They identify six "good practices" for large scale change strategies that greatly increase the likelihood of success: 1) Treat transformation

Thanks for highlighting Jeremy, we agree that low NHS productivity is a real problem A quick thread to explain the causes and why the strategies that led to productivity improvements during the 2010s likely contributed to some of the current problems šŸ§µšŸ‘‡

This is what much of the debate about our post-election spending plans is missing. NHS funding is also up by a third since 2010. The answer isn’t just more money, it has to be about productivity. If we can hit the 0.5% productivity growth increases we regularly got in the years

TL;DR: No difference in mortality, functional recovery or return to prior place of residence at up to 1y after surgery with spinal vs general anesthesia for hip fracture surgery. 2/2

I’ve felt a sense of horror at recent NHS tragedies in the news, whether maternity, the response at Chester when staff tried to speak-up, the awful stories from female surgeons, or the death of Martha Mills, two things come to mind. Culture & the steep authority gradient 1/3

Can you change culture in an organisation? Yes! Rewarding and cost effective? Yes! Quick or easy? No, BUT this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tackle the elephant in the room

1. Please don’t waste your time with crappy meaningless audits! So many opportunities to do quick small projects that will make an actual difference 2. Agree that endless data collection is for the birds. Focus on changing something with minimal effort on data

UK astonishingly far behind on CT and MRI scanners - I get that tech isn’t everything - but can we really justify being this much of an outlier? ⁦@RestIsPolitics⁩

NEW: we need to talk about NHS staff retention. At a time when Britain’s healthcare system is acutely short of workers, *1 in 7* UK-trained doctors are practising overseas. No other developed country is like this, which immediately tells you there’s a problem. Let’s dig deeper:

Total number of biases is not important. For more important to recognise that clinical bias is a Thing, and affects everyone’s decision making. Even yours.

Psychologists have posited hundreds of cognitive biases over the years. A new paper argues that they all boil down to one of a handful of fundamental beliefs coupled with confirmation bias. https://t.co/bDDmNftq7M
