The moment I left law for HR, my grandmother looked at me and said: “Why would you want to be a personnel guy?” This moment lit a fire in me: to show HR isn’t secondary but the engine of every business.

Someone can be great at the job, and still be wrong for your company. Performance without cultural alignment chips away at your vision. Here’s why I never make this trade anymore 👇

People don’t fear change. They fear not knowing what it means for them. Leaders who explain the “why” keep trust intact, even when the path forward is messy.

Jackson O. Lynch and I recently discussed this at the 2025 SHRM Executive Network Visionaries Conference: Leaders don’t create high-performing teams by avoiding hard feedback, lowering expectations, and calling it “safety.” They build them with clarity: clear feedback, clear

We keep saying we support skills-based hiring. But only 1 in 700 jobs is actually filled based on skills. Why the gap? Watch the video to find out.

They call HR the “back office.” But when things get hard, HR is who shows up first. You steady the team, hold the culture, and lead through the unknown. Thank you for doing the work. Whether it’s seen or not, it always matters. #SHRMDay

We keep promoting top performers into management with zero training. Then act surprised when teams fall apart. Being good at your job ≠ being good with people. Remember, People don’t quit jobs. They quit managers who were set up to fail.

If you’re leading, you should be mentoring. This is how teams grow. This is how trust is built. This is how companies thrive. Great leaders solve today’s problems and prepare people to handle tomorrow’s.

We’ve been asking the wrong question about AI: This shift, from who does the work to how it gets done, changes everything. And no team is closer to this question than HR.

We started treating “new” like it meant “better.” As if the future of work belongs only to the young. But older workers bring something AI and hustle can’t replicate: Wisdom earned over time. Ignore experience, and you’ll keep relearning what they already figured out.

You wrote “civility” in your company’s mission statement. But are you demonstrating #Respect in your actions? To create civil #WorkplaceEnvironments, we must: ✊🏾 Listen actively. ✊🏾 Ask for feedback. ✊🏾 Encourage employees to speak up. ✊🏾 Respect staff with opposing views.

I’ve seen too many leaders focus on hiring “the best” and stop there. The truth? That’s the easy part. The real test of leadership is whether you build a culture where the best want to stay because they feel inspired, valued, and aligned. That’s when organizations win.
