The operational independence of policing from political control is a cornerstone of our democracy and democratic freedom. Authoritarian states have political control of policing yet some politicians advocate this for the UK. This is a big error. My column:

One of the hallmarks that separates truly democratic states from authoritarian regimes is the independence of their institutions...

Paintings with windows are always thought provoking as the viewer contemplates and wonders what might be seen through the windows.
This is "The Window" by Archibald Hattemore from 1931 which was the last year that Arch exhibited with the Group. The painting was once owned by the American fashion designer, Bill Blass. #ArchibaldHattemore #EastLondonGroup

In an age of deep fakes, toxic influencers and algorithmic influence, teaching young people how to think critically about what encounter online isn’t just a nice to have. I set out in @LabourList why the curriculum’s new focus on media literacy matters 👉 https://t.co/yNv58CXfhS

The Curriculum and Assessment Review, and the Government’s response, may have quietly set in train one of the most important and enduring legacies of this…

At its core the battle for NYC was the politics of fear and division against the politics of hope. This is a fantastic moment we can all celebrate whatever our politics, left or right because hope won🙌 Hope won there and it can win here. Many many congratulations to a young man
“New York will remain a city of immigrants. A city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.” Watch the best of @ZohranKMamdani victory speech after becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor.

New Yorkers faced a clear choice - between hope and fear - and just like we've seen in London - hope won. Huge congratulations to @ZohranKMamdani on his historic campaign.

When I was 17, I worked in McDonald’s to pay my rent while at uni. I was paid half of what a 25yo colleague doing the exact same job earned, just because of my age. Wages based on age belong in the bin. Proud that Labour is committed to that - in stark contrast to this lot.
"There's an argument the minimum wage is too high for younger workers" says Nigel Farage, who urges the Chancellor to "do something" about it

The attack on the Doncaster London train on Saturday night was evil and unconscionable. Passengers may carry emotional and physical scars for years. But an arrest of a deranged murderous individual within 8 minutes? And all round heroism. On this occasion ‘broken’ Britain worked.
