South Laurel Cardinals Football Coach. Former Coach at Pulaski County & Barren County. Assistant Coach at Palm Bay (FL) High, & Morehead (KY) State University
“Football isn’t a sport for liars. It demands brutal honesty. You can lie to us about your speed, strength, technique and how your grind is grindier than the grindiest grind that’s ever been grinded. Cool. No one cares. Step across that white line and we’ll all see the truth.”
“The weight-room is special because it only rewards those that work. It values tenacity over talent. It doesn’t care about ⭐️’s or playing time. It’s a sanctuary where athletes aren’t subject to scrutiny from the outside world. The weight-room is a equal opportunity equalizer.”
“The purest form of football is still small town, small school HS 🏈. It’s not about the money, facilities , slick new uniforms or coaches’ long term contracts & buyouts. It’s taking pride to be successful for yourself, classmates, parents and the community who supports you.”
Had a college coach recruiting an Offensive Lineman one time, and the coach came to watch practice. They were ready to “offer” the player. They didn’t. Coach told me he .... “didn’t hustle much” in practice. “Only went through the motions...”
Energy & Enthusiasm! Everyday!!
“If your job is to go get the doughnuts,
you bring the freshest doughnuts & the hottest coffee.
& you do it in a way that everybody notices.
‘That guy gets the best doughnuts in the history of the doughnut business.’
& that’s just how you have to do things.”
-Dabo Swinney
Doing your job doesn’t always mean scoring TD’s. It may mean running your route full speed to open up the play for your buddy or making a block to open a hole for the RB. If you aren’t genuinely fired up for your teammate when he does well- you need to check yourself. Team 1st.
How many coaches think this way? We get tore up when a kid skips a practice, or we have one with a bad attitude, or even one that quits. Keeps us up at night-When we ought to be spending our energy on the 50 that show up every day & work their butts off to be the best they can be
Want to get strong? Train heavy. Want to be fast? Practice running fast. Want to be explosive? Train with Olympic movements. Combine that with eating real food and sleep. It’s not rocket science. Be a better athlete. Don’t need the self-proclaimed experts to take your money
Kids say they "love" their sport yet don't show up to workouts, don't make the grades, and are behavior issues in their schools & community. None of this says you "love" anything more than the social media attention. Talk is cheap. Be about it.”

“Disheartening to watch the trend in high school football w/ players transferring from their hometown teams. Some of the best memories / friendship I have to this day come from high school ball. Wouldn't thought of leaving the guys I grew up playing with for "greener pastures"
In honor of Andrew Dodson, the lights at PC Stadium will burn on Friday Night, (Gameday) starting at 7:30 pm (Kick off time) and burn for 80 minutes (Andrew’s jersey number). Any team is welcome to join the tribute to a football player gone too soon.

“It's amazing what the weightroom reveals about an athlete. Team player? How tough are they? Consistent, or do they fizzle out after honeymoon is over and grind sets in? Take shortcuts around reps/sets, or do they embrace discomfort & follow script? How bad do they want to win?”
Do you think the Governor realizes that all of these high school kids that want to go back to school and play sports, ... will be registered voters when he’s up for re-election?
1) My Views
I have spent since March 15, holding my tongue. I feel like I must speak up to someone. The following tweets are my views, and mine only. I hope to not offend anyone, just need to vent. I apologize in advance if I offend you. I’ll be glad to read your “vent-views.”
Congratulations to Damian Harris,
@DHx34
Patriots RB, on rushing for over 100 yards for the first time in his NFL career. Watching him run roughshod over an NFL defense was somewhat comforting for those of us that have seen THAT before! Congrats and many more buddy.
Players: Toughness is a skill. It’s hard to teach, hard to find & hard to beat. I’ve never heard a coach complain that they had too many tough kids. Strengthen your mental/physical toughness. Accept that it will always be tough, but always get up & come back for more. Never quit
Players have 2 choices: You can pout or prepare. Whether you play or don’t play, whether you win or lose, you will never regret working hard, making sacrifices, being disciplined or focusing too much. These skills not only prepare you for the game, but will prepare you for life.

If a coach from another school is contacting you, weather it’s calls, texts, DMs, or whatever, it is ILLEGAL RECRUITING. That is a punishable rules violation in the KHSAA rule book.
@KHSAA
When you discover your “why,”....
*You won’t forget your workout clothes anymore-
*You won’t be late to practice anymore-
*You won’t tolerate half speed teammates anymore-
*You won’t lose your knee pads anymore-
*You won’t accept anything less than supreme effort from yourself.
Too many kids have been taught that the goal of HS sports is to achieve an ATHLETIC scholarship. Here is the truth-the goal of HS sports is to learn how to be a better person, better teammate, better communicator,& to enjoy being a teenager,something you can’t get back.
-R Edsall
I like that Georgia is wearing black jerseys and Cincy in red. Why does someone always have to wear white? Why can’t we, in high school, (as long as it’s contrasting colors) do that?
BCHS has the unique opportunity to offer indoor seating for home football games! This includes tickets and refreshments for up to 20 guests with an unbelievable view! Can be reserved on a game by game basis or for the entire season. Contact Warren Cunningham at 270-651-6315.
Parents— A Player has an “opportunity” to show what he’s got, at every practice. Practice is where game time is earned. If he’s lazy, no hustle, doesn’t carry out assignments correctly in PRACTICE, don’t expect him to be in the game. The players in his place have performed better
Players: if you are contacted (in ANY way) by a coach at another school, to talk to you about coming to his school, it is ILLEGAL, and punishable by the
@KHSAA
If the Coach has you come to his school for a “visit,” to talk about transferring, that is illegal.
I’ve had players say: “I really want to play Coach, what can I do extra? On my own?” ..... How ‘bout you just do what we ask at 100% effort? .... I’ve had parents ask: “What do we need to do to help him? Hire personal trainer?” .... How ‘bout you just bring him to workouts?
5 years ago tonight, the Pulaski County Maroons won the Kentucky Class 5A State Championship for the first time...... Here’s to all those trying to make it happen this weekend.......

It is a violation of KHSAA rules and the offending Coach is open to punishment.
Hmmmm. So Georgia Baseball works out in the weightroom DURING the season, and ON GAME DAY...?! What a concept. Get stronger, run faster, hit the ball harder, throw it harder, play baseball better? Who woulda thunk it?
“IT IS HARD TO:
- Get up early and workout
- Push through the last rep
- Touch every line in conditioning
- Compete on every play
- Maintain your poise
- Confront a teammate
But it is much harder to live with the
REGRET of not reaching your goals
when you don't do these things”
High school coach recruiting a player from another school…
“Come to my school and we will
1) win the state title, and
2) I’ll get you a D-1 scholarship…”
So parents, what happens when NEITHER comes true….?
Fridays scrimmage at PC Stadium will NOT require an Admission Charge, but we will ask for a “Donation” to send supplies to those affected by the flooding in Eastern Kentucky. (However, we will have a full concession stand, with the “World’s Greatest Hot Dogs”)
@caseyrebfbcoach
Sometimes in life (football), you just get your butt kicked. You can deal with it two ways. One way is to sulk. Quit. Give up on your dreams. Or, you can come back stronger, more determined, more focused on what you are trying to accomplish…. Which one are you…?

“I’ll take the 5’ 8” 140 pound leader that works his guts out and never quits over the 6’ 4” 220 pound primadonna who “talks” more than they work. If you think genetics guarantees you something, ask Goliath how that worked out.”

From CDC Director: “Suicides & drug overdoses have surpassed death rate of COVID among high school students......”
Let that sink in when you realize KY kids still aren’t back in school.
From CDC Director: “Suicides & drug overdoses have surpassed death rate of COVID among high school students.”
- COVID-19 needs to be mitigated w/ proper protocols.
- Mental Health still VITALLY important in adolescents.
- Numerous studies prove impact of sports on mental health.
“Young men need football more now than ever. It is one of the only places in the modern world where they have to face themselves, where there is no easy way out, and where their successes are the results of their own efforts. Football is a zone of deep responsibility.”
-C. Crabbe
Boy I tell ya! Stop to get gas this morning at a place that I frequent... in MY town, ... and what football coach’s picture do they have displayed on the gas pump??!!!
@PHS_CoachMac
Haha! Love it!
11) Conclusion
Let’s get our lives back. Now. For the kids, for us. Let’s handle life’s adversities with a little more “toughness” next time. Let’s not let some virus change our lives ever again.
In the history of Kentucky High School Football, only 4 players have ever caught 100 or more passes in a season. The incredible Jake Johnson did it twice. (139 in 2016, & 104 in 2015). Jr WR Jake Sloan now has 89 catches this season. The countdown to 100 is officially on!! (11)
I remember being mad as “crap” that our defense (Pulaski) couldn’t track down this little receiver from Boyle County, as he cross-crossed the field for a TD with a hitch pass!

@NealBrown_WVU
“Seniors: You have one season of HS football left. Please don’t take a single opportunity or day for granted. Work hard. Be present & live in the moment. Cherish your teammates & coaches. Make memories for a lifetime, because the days will come & go all too soon!”
-Jon Beck
5) Shutdown
On March 15, our “normal” way of life was shut down. We MUST get back to it. No, not some “new normal,” but NORMAL. Never in my lifetime has this happened. Not 9-11, not Vietnam, Gulf Wars, etc. And we are afraid of a virus that strikes less than 1% of population?
10) Let’s Go!!!
We have done what we were asked. We “flattened the curve,” the healthcare system wasn’t overrun. (That was the reason after all.) Let’s take our “lives” back. School, ball, lets love our neighbor, hug your kids, let life return.... I want mine back too.
The KY Coaching Fraternity lost a great man today. Coach Alvis Johnson coached Football, Track, and was the AD at Harrodsburg High for 23 years. He was a great man that touched countless lives. Prayers for the family.
4) Toughness
In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt was shot by a would-be assassin, as he gave a speech. He FINISHED THE SPEECH! And we think we are “tough?” Where do the young males of America learn Toughness? Roosevelt said football is NEEDED for the young men of our country.
As 2023 comes to a close, I can’t help but be grateful. Lots of good things happened for me in 2023…. Unexpected good things…. Things I didn’t know were “in the Cards….” As I look to 2024, I can’t help but feel….. giddy about it….Lets goooooo!!!
#InTheCards
In January, there will be schools all over the state that will start their Off-Season Program….Some players will show up most days, and do whatever the Coach says…And Some will will be there EVERYDAY, and work harder than any others….Those will be talked about in the fall…
So proud of Damian Harris. Had many sleepless nights because of him in high school. Been pulling for him the last four years. Good luck tonight. Finish strong.

3) The Kids
As a teen-age kid in small town America, a kid’s whole “life,” is school and ball. It’s their every thought. Their entire being. Now, their “life” has been taken away. How much mental health damage are we doing to kids? We have to give them back their lives.
“When you join a football team, you must learn to sacrifice yourself in the effort. It ain’t about YOU anymore. It’s about US. It’s about TEAM. People are counting on you to do your part. If you can’t be counted on, the TEAM suffers. Successful TEAMS have players that think TEAM”
You know... If a Coach recruits players illegally to come to his school,.... then wouldn’t it be fair, for the local kids at that school that are being passed over, (unwanted), to transfer to a neighboring school...?
@KHSAA
The doctor who invented the R.I.C.E. protocol (rest ice compression elevation) recently retracted & claimed he was WRONG about ice, saying it actually delays the healing process!
That’s interesting. I’ve heard for years Ice is the first thing for injury?
Exciting to see Madison Southern’s Damian Harris running the rock on Monday Night Football. Wasn’t long ago he was burning up high school fields around here.
@DHx34
“There have now been two people ever, in the history of high school football in Kentucky, that have caught 300 passes in their career....
Jake Sloan, and Jake Johnson.

“My guess is if a study was done on O-Linemen 10 years after HS, you would find the most successful players on your team. They are selfless, humble, great teammates, grinders, and always have that blue collar mentality. It takes a special young man to be an O-Lineman”
-Rob Luther
9) Normal
Forget “new normal.” We want OLD NORMAL. For teenagers, for little kids, for a caring society. Yes there are risks. Disease, crashes, accidents, we deal with them everyday. I’ve survived 59 years on this earth with “daily risks.” I’ll take my chances from here on.
It’s been my pleasure to serve the football coaches of Kentucky, as the President of the Kentucky High School Football Coaches Association for the past two years. Best of luck to new President Dale Estes (Campbellsville). Anyway I can help, I’m here.
@estes_coach
6) Local Powers
In the constitution, and state constitution, it is actually up to the local powers-that-be to make decisions for their entities. Mayor, County Judge Executive, and local School Superintendents need to make the decisions for Pulaski County. Not the Governor.
7) Social Distancing
Hate it. In America, we shake hands. We touch. This has alienated our society. Jesus hugged kids. Would the Good Samaritan have stopped to help with “social distancing?” Couple generations ago we left homes unlocked for travelers to stop and eat on their way
Cullen Cox has just become the ONLY PC Maroon to win:

PC is glad to add Coach Jackson Mobley to the coaching staff. Coach Mobley was an All-State OLB at PC, played on the ‘14 State Championship Team, and went on to play at Lindsey Wilson College. Coach Mobley will be working with LBs, RBs, and will have an impact on special teams.
