Offshore oil is back. At what cost? “…oil demand will remain strong for decades to come and failure to invest in supply would lead to soaring prices and economic chaos.”

Confirmation of some good news. The recoverable oil volume from this discovery is estimated to be 340 million barrels. Canada’s offshore holds so much potential yet remains largely under explored.

“Oil and gas exploration plummeted during the pandemic, but attractive economics, a renewed social licence and a need to add more advantaged resources to company portfolios mean enthusiasm for discovering new fields is bubbling up again.”

Such a great player and even better person. I had the pleasure of watching her greatness emerge over the years and now all of us can witness it on the world stage with @CanBball U16s this week. Congratulations Newfoundland and Labrador’s Sarah Reid. Photo by @NLSPORTSPHOTOS

“We see enough advantaged resources to satisfy only about half of our base-case oil and gas demand forecast to 2050.”- Woodmac. Our larger offshore Canada prospects fall within the “advantaged barrel” category. The world is in pursuit of these critical resources.

Research from @WoodMackenzie finds that just 28% of resources in undeveloped fields are “low-cost, low-carbon ‘advantaged’ barrels”. With the energy transition requiring oil and gas for “decades to come”, is this a threat to the pace of decarbonisation? https://t.co/aAr3VqKUhm

The article references 5000m depth. This is the total depth to reservoir from sea level. Water depth is about 1500m. So the reservoir is about 3500m below mud line.

One of the top 5 exploration wells in the world will be drilled this summer offshore Newfoundland. The Cape Freels prospect initially assumed to hold 4-5 billion barrels of oil and gas, potentially double in size to the offshore Hibernia field.
