The
@NFL
says its commitment to diversity extends beyond the sideline and front office, but the numbers in the newsroom at the league-owned media group says otherwise. So I asked
@nflcommish
sbout it. 👇🏾
Really emotional scene outside Eagles locker room. Josh McCown, walking alone, stops on way in, squats and begins to cry. Zach Ertz and another teammate console him. He gave all he had.
Dawn Staley says the No. 1 prerequisite when recruiting a player - after talent - is their relationship with their parents. “If they respect their parents, they’re going to respect us.”

BREAKING: NFL owners will vote next week on a resolution that would improve a team's draft position if it hires a person of color as head coach or general manager, per sources. Currently there are only 2 black GMs & 4 HCs of color, matching 17-year low👇🏾
It’s a ritual when a loved one passes that we go to the photo album and take a ride down memory lane. This is my father, who passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. You couldn’t tell him he wasn’t clean. 🤣

Going forward, each time I hear Gruden say he wants players who have great character and talent, who don’t miss games, who are bad-asses on the field but gentlemen off it, who are great teammates and leaders, I’m going to post a picture of Khalil Mack.
You can agree or disagree with
@DezBryant
, but I respect that he put his name on it. No anonymous sources. No talking behind backs. Stephen Jones came for him, and Dez was there to answer.
Unpopular take: There’s fault on both sides. The NFL never should have announced this workout until ALL the details were final and agreed to. And Colin has to accept that he can’t call every shot. Right or wrong, the NFL is - and always will be - bigger than one player.
BREAKING: Maryland coach Michael Locksley forms new minority football coaches collation to identity and groom candidates for advancement in college & NFL. Powerful board of directors includes Ozzie Newsome, Nick Saban, Mike Tomlin and Debbie Yow.
Not a good look for diversity today in the NFL. In 2006, when Commissioner Goodell was hired, there were seven minority coaches and four minority general managers. Today there are three minority HCs and 1 minority GM after Ozzie retires.
Raiders coach Jon Gruden has fired respected defensive line coach Brenston Buckner and is expected to replace him with Rod Marinelli. Under Buckner, the Raiders improved from 13 sacks in 2018 to 32 this year, and from 30th against the run to 8th.
For the late-arriving crowd: The lack of black head coaches in the NFL is not a league issue, it’s an ownership issue. Owners are master contortionists when coming up with reasons why we aren’t “qualified” or “ready”. 32 teams: 1 black GM, 3 black coaches.
So many thoughts on this initial six-game suspension for Deshaun Watson. It’s crazy for the arbiter to say his conduct was “egregious” and then give him such a soft punishment. This was a fail in her first significant ruling, and the league should appeal it.
NFL owners should be careful. A few prominent Black players are telling me they want to sit out a game to make their feelings felt & force change/action. They are tired, frustrated and emotional. It’s only a few at this point, but sparks become flames & flames become infernos.
Was going through some old photos and this popped up. Life sure comes at you fast in the NFL. This was a year ago, after the Raiders clinched a playoff berth with a win in the final week of the season.
I’m told the Panthers did NOT ask Eric Reid whether he would continue demonstrating. The signing was strictly a “football decision”. They believe he’s a good football player who can help them win.
Most interesting statement from a Rams O-lineman last night was Whitworth telling me that the staff doesn’t coach football; it teaches football. It stresses the why, not the what. Hence all 11 players see the big picture and are able to adjust on the fly.
The media have to do a better job of explaining what “defunding” the police means. They should not assume that everyone understands how it would actually work. Not taking sides here. Just saying an informed discussion requires an informed public.
I’ve thought a lot about Brian Flores’ lawsuit against
@nfl
for alleged discriminatory hiring practices. His case is the micro. The macro is the culture within the NFL, including owner behavior that was covered up by the league-owned newsroom. Stay tuned. More to come.
BREAKING: Journalist
@JimTrotter_NFL
has filed a retaliation lawsuit against the NFL.
Trotter previously asked some bold questions about hiring practices of Roger Goodell, while working for the NFL, during a nationally televised broadcast.
There is no better NFL opening than Cleveland. The Browns' future is brighter than some playoff teams. Couldn't be happier for their long-suffering fans.
If I were a QB, I’d love to play for Sean Payton. Whether it’s Drew, Teddy, Taysom or Jameis, he does a beautiful job of adjusting his play calling to their individual strengths.
@Saints
The Chargers were one of the 10 teams to interview Kyler Murray at the Combine. Coach Anthony Lynn told me post-interview that Kyler was “impressive”, “sharp” and had great recall at the white board.
Another reason I respect Kyle Shanahan: After the defense’s great showing today, he let coordinator Robert Saleh address the media at the podium. Can’t remember the last time in the regular season I’ve seen a head coach OK a coordinator for a postgame podium presser.
This was sent to me.
@nflcommish
simply doesn’t care or doesn’t want to know. The data is what it is: the NFL newsroom has zero Black managers, zero Black copy editors, and zero fulltime Black employees on the news desk. Those are facts. Nothing he says changes that.
When asked about the WFT investigation today at the NFL owners meeting, the Jets’ Woody Johnson reportedly told the media: “We’re here for football.” If ever an answer reflected the collective thoughts of the owners, that was it. Wow. Just … wow.
Received this from a former staffer regarding the Eagles: They have not had a full-time black HC/GM/OC/DC in 20 years yet they have a gigantic picture of MLK in the lobby of the practice facility. 🤔
I typically don’t target officials, but that was so weak. A non-player should NEVER put his hands on a player. And yet the player has to pay a price for that action.

Some personal news: This will be my final week with the NFL Media Group. I was informed over the weekend that my contract is not being renewed. I thank NFL Network and for the lessons learned and affirmed over the last five years.
I just want to say - again - thank you to the
@BuffaloBills
medical team for its immediate care of Damar Hamlin after he collapsed. The physicians at UC medical center just acknowledged things could have taken a dramatically different turn if not for that care.
I’ve covered the NFL for more than two decades. When I retire, I will remember
@JOEL9ONE
as one of the more impactful figures I dealt with: a white man who stood with his black brothers to fight social injustice.

Cheers. Been a hell of a journey. Eleven years and I can honestly say I put my soul into every minute of it. Highs and lows. I’ve seen them both and I appreciate the perspective. Gratitude and love to those who lifted me up.
Leaving Minneapolis now. One memory: Of the dozen-plus Super Bowls I’ve attended, I’ve never seen a fan base turn out and turn up like Eagles supporters did last night during the game. They owned the stadium.
I’ve heard from various club reps at every level this week. None felt the Kaepernick workout was being handled in a common-sensical manner. The lack of planning and attention to detail created what multiple scouts called a “mess” today in Atlanta.
While at ESPN, a manager told me: “I could never watch you on TV for two hours. You’re a good reporter, but you’re boring.” This same manager had a picture of Fred Berry in his office al& had previously told me “Rerun” was his favorite TV character. 🤔
Huddle&Flow drops later today with Texans coach David Culley. Based on the conversation, I firmly believe Deshaun Watson will be traded. Culley didn’t explicitly say that, but when using terms like on the roster “right now” & “we want guys who are all in”—writing is on the wall.
Been tied up. Just got to my phone. Lots of messages about the Dan Campbell press conference. I click on a link ... first thought: I don’t ever want to hear that a Black coach didn’t interview well. 🤦🏾♂️
BREAKING: NFL owners have voted to approve the resolution that would prevent teams from blocking assistant coaches from interviewing for coordinator positions, per sources. This is an important step.
OK, let's talk Chargers. The ground rules: I am not going to tell you what *I* would do; I'm going to tell you what I think ownership will do, based on more than two decades of being around the team. ...
The surprising (not surprising) element of this Brittney Griner story - to me, at least - is that we seem more focused on the lack of chartered flights than we are on the behavior of the person who harassed her. It really is amazing that we’ve become so tolerant of this crap.
I’ve said it for years and will say it again: The NFL and the NFLPA should have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to both domestic violence and DUI.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross:
 founder of RISE, which fights to eliminate racial discrimination;
— only NFL owner with an African-American GM;
— only NFL owner among 8 teams with head-coaching vacancies this year to hire (pending) an Af-Am;
— also has Af-Am senior VP of Comm.
This is what advocacy looks like. Major props to Coach Vrabel for this. Of course, it goes without saying that actions like this won’t matter until team owners show a commitment to opening their minds and being intentional about a fair hiring process. 👇🏾
Mike Vrabel announces that assistant HC and DL coach Terrell Williams will serve as Titans’ HC vs Bears on Saturday. Vrabel will be assisting. Great exposure for Williams down the road for potential HC candidacy:
I was among those critical of Dan Campbell after his introductory press conference. Turns out the joke is on me. It was beautiful how the
@Lions
followed his lead and refused to give in to their circumstances/poor start.

If you think everyone in the league office is upset about Flores suing the league, you should think again. Some contend this type of suit has been long overdue.
Antonio Brown may be upset about not being able to wear his older-model helmet, but there is ZERO chance he retires because of it. So can we please find another storyline? We have a long season to go.
Perhaps I’m just showing my age, but the in-game experience at sporting events doesn’t measure up to the at-home experience. All the cursing, drunkenness and general rudeness ... I’ll take my couch, my HD and no bathroom lines every time.

Eric Dickerson is leading group of HOF'ers threatening to boycott HOF if Gold Jackets don't get annual salary & lifetime healthcare. This reeks of selfishness. Why not fight for ALL retired players? Reminiscent of QB Club that once divided players. Among members then: Dickerson.
Mulkey has every right to be upset with this column. It’s horribly framed and patently offensive. How he was allowed to call the LSU players “dirty debutants” defies explanation. Just awful.
Ran across this photo I took the night that Kaepernick first took a knee. Prior to this, he had sat during the anthem. He got a lot of love from 49ers fans as he left the field after the game against the Chargers.
Before the plane door closes, I’m still trying to recall if, in my 30-plus years of covering the league, I’ve ever seen a player slam his helmet, have the head coach awkwardly retrieve it as if it were a baby’s bottle, then have the player slam it again with the coach watching.
Can’t believe the Raiders would be crazy enough to seriously consider trading Mack, but I’m hearing offers are coming in and they’re weighing them. Strange considering people in org call Mack their best player. Not best defensive player. But player. Period.
I seem to remember Brett Favre having an opinion when Aaron Rodgers was drafted. Or maybe that was a different insecure, Mississippi-raised QB who got in his feelings. 🤷🏾♂️
Student came to class today with his child due to no babysitter or anybody to watch her while he was in class.
My professor NATHAN ALEXANDER said “I’ll hold her so you can take good notes!”

Very cool what Terrell Owens did, sending shoes to each of his HOF classmates that features the person’s likeness and career accomplishments. Here is the pair he sent to Bobby Beathard.
I was not expecting to open my local newspaper (yes, some of us still like to get ink on our fingertips) and see my face staring back at me. Thank you,
