It truly takes a village to run for office & I want to say THANK YOU to every person who volunteered, made a donation, posted a yard sign or supported in any way. WE DID IT! District 20 resoundingly voted to send me + the D20 team back to Annapolis. 🎉
When Beau Biden died, practically the whole state of Delaware turned out to the funeral to support the Bidens. In the midst of his mourning, Joe greeted and shook hands with every single person who came. Mostly strangers, including my mother. She’ll never forget.
The senseless murder of George Floyd served as yet another reminder that we still have a long way to go to live up to our nation’s highest ideals.
Justice has now been served, and we hope that this verdict will bring some measure of peace to the Floyd family and the community.
This morning, I joined the Montgomery County Sister Cities for a silent humanitarian walk in solidarity and a call for peace worldwide.
I stand with our Ethiopian community as we continue to call out at stand against the genocide in Tigray.
I just find it interesting that the same people who want to control my uterus also vote against universal Pre-K, raising wages, health insurance access, Blueprint, police reform, low income tax credit expansion, housing protections, affordable health care etc.
#AbortionCareAccess
The Maryland General Assembly adjourned tonight without passing emergency rent protections (HB 1312) in the midst of a pandemic where over 200k MD families are at risk of eviction. Shame on us. Shame on the Senate. With every person that is evicted, remember this.
Hey Maryland - good luck getting election results back in a timely manner this year.
@GovLarryHogan
just vetoed a bill that would have allowed the Brd of Elections to start processing mail-in ballots before Election Day. Mail-in ballot requests are HIGH for the upcoming election.
Proud to be named a
@MomsDemand
Gun Sense Candidate for my record of standing up for gun safety and reform. Proud to vote to ban bump stocks, pass red flag law, and increase funding for gun violence prevention.
Excited to formally endorse
@ewarren
for president! I’ve known Sen. Warren’s work for a decade in my civil rights career when she came to the national stage relentlessly fighting for us during the financial crisis. She’s been fighting for us ever since.
#TeamWarren
GOOD NEWS - two of my bills will go into law *without* Gov. Hogan’s signature.
✅Doula coverage for pregnant Medicaid patients!
✅Prohibition against discrimination in all schools that receive state funding
We just overrode the governor’s veto of the bill to expand the Maryland Dream Act! Dreamers will have greater access to in-state tuition for higher education without arbitrary barriers.
Just dropped the Counselors Not Cops bill in the hopper (next to the hand sanitizer) for introduction! This bill will DEFUND the $10 million the state provides for local SROs and SHIFT these funds to counselors, mental health, trauma practices, and reformative justice 4 students.
Thank you everyone for your efforts to find
@josephlkitchen
. Sadly, I am sharing that Joseph has passed away.
Rest in peace, my dear friend. I truly miss you.
I started to feel sick over the weekend, and I immediately got tested for COVID-19 and isolated myself. My test results this morning show that I’m positive for COVID-19. I’m grateful that my vaccine and booster enabled my body to fight the virus while I experienced mild symptoms.
Saturday on the House floor - VETO OVERRIDES! We just overrode Gov. Hogan’s veto of collective bargaining rights for the Office of the Public Defender.
Hogan VETOED our bill to ⬆️ the # of abortion providers in MD and fund a training program to perform the procedure safely. Hogan held the funds and they were never released until Wes Moore became Governor!! Is this who we want representing MD in the Senate?
#noHogan
While I'm not personally a proponent of abortion, I've long said that I'm not going to take that right away for others to make that decision. As governor, I gave Marylanders my word that I would not overturn Maryland law. I will never support a national abortion ban.
#MDImmigrantChallenge
I was born in Kingston, Jamaica 🇯🇲and came to the U.S. w/ my mom & brother when I was 5 yo. My family members overcame undocumented status, harsh farm labor & separation to pave the way. ALL immigrants deserve dignity and to live w/o fear.
#DignityTrust
Officially sworn in for a full 4-year term in the House of Delegates! As I raised my right hand & took the oath of office, I thought of the journey to this moment & everyone who supported our historic campaign. This is our day! Thank you for your vote, time & investment. 💙
A reminder that Hogan vetoed the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, which gave our TEACHERS a raise and made record investments in education.
Yet a whole press conference and grandstanding today for the police raises.
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
My inbox is filled with emails from non-constituents opposing my pro-immigrant bill. Sorry to break it to them, but I’m in strong support of my bill...and all immigrants! This bill hearing will be fun.

“We must reject the idea that accountability for police officers is anti-police or harmful to public safety,” Wilkins, D-Montgomery, told the House committee. “Police accountability is public safety.”
Nic Kipke was intoxicated and belligerent on the House floor last night. His shameful behavior was unwarranted and beneath the dignity of the House Chamber.
He must apologize immediately and consider if his future is in the House.
Feels so good right be back home in Silver Spring after a LONG week legislating in Annapolis. Sitting still for the first time this week and taking in all that we accomplished, including finally repealing LEOBR. We did it.
I’m so honored to receive the Regional Legislator of the Year Award by the National Black Caucus of State Legislators at the 45th Annual Conference!
It’s a privilege to serve and lead policy change that makes a difference!

Wednesday! Proud to drop legislation to ensure that schools and educators have the tools they need to support students dealing with trauma.
#TraumaInformedSchools
Just a few seconds ago, some colleagues fought against access to abortion care. Now they are fighting hard to sustain Hogan’s veto of 12 weeks paid time off for employees in the BIRTH or adoption of a child, or to take care of a loved one.
#perplexed
Anyone in "positions of power" in MoCo putting out statements, kneeling, or speaking words of solidarity must also call out the unjust police murder of ROBERT WHITE and ask critical questions about the recent fatal police shooting of FINAN BERHE and other victims right here MoCo.
I just introduced the Police Qualified Immunity & Accountability Act (HB 1049) to end police immunity in Maryland and hold reckless officers personally accountable.

If you're in Montgomery County and you're *only* looking on the outside...calling out the murder of George Floyd as unjust, you're missing the police violence and harassment that has taken place right here and the opportunity to change it.
My friend
@GabrielAcevero
is one of the most principled and passionate people I know. He’s been an advocate on policing issues long before we were legislators, and I’ll always stand with him. Proud of you, friend.
In every debate I’ve led on rent issues, there’s always been a tendency to separate the “good” and “bad” renters in an effort decide who deserves to have a roof over their head. This is why we have to start from the frame of housing as a human right for everyone.
The house passes HB 295 sponsored by Delegate
@JheanelleW
- This legislation ensures private schools cannot discriminate against students based on race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or disability
#Working4MD
What troubles me the most about Del. Lisanti is that it is clear that she does not understand the weight of her actions and the racist views she expressed. Without this, true redemption and healing cannot begin.
MD will be VOTING BY MAIL in the June 2 primary. Register to vote by 5/27. All registered voters will *automatically* receive a ballot in the mail with postage pre-paid. Check your registration info today:
The Ways & Means Committee just passed
@GovWesMoore
’s FIRST BILL ever out of committee - the Family Property Act which will enhance the MD Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit!
I’m proud to be sponsor
#1
of this bill!
Ahhhh! That feeling when you SEE the bill you sponsored in action! 🎉
Prefer mail-in voting? You can now

to have your ballot automatically mailed to you in every future election!
Thank you
@SpeakerAJones
for making permanent mail-in voting a top priority. 🗳
Immigrant communities have been the hardest hit by COVID-19 and they have worked on the frontlines while being shut out of many existing relief options. We must ensure they are included in MD COVID Relief and I'm working with colleagues for full inclusion.
For some reason, I don’t think this will go over well. “Excuse me landlord, may I have a 3-month rent holiday?” This is a joke. Executive action is needed to provide relief to consumers.
In MD, we shouldn’t have to call on Congress or Biden to act because the legislature could have passed policy to prevent evictions and protect residents! The emergency bill sat in the Senate for THREE weeks and ran out of time on Sine Die.
Friday on the House Floor. I’m all smiles under my mask- the first Black woman was nominated to the SCOTUS and just voted to put cannabis legalization on the ballot!
Maryland is losing over $100M in revenue by exempting the estates of wealthy residents from paying their fair share in taxes. I'm introducing the Estate Tax Fair Share bill to help ensure the wealthy pay their share! Learn more tomorrow at Lunch & Legislation Live

Barack Obama: "The elected officials who matter most in reforming police departments and the criminal justice system work at the state and local levels."
I just don’t get it. Why does the gov. insist on mandating when our school systems start the first day of school? Would love for
@GovLarryHogan
to fight as passionately to ensure a quality education for all of our students, and work with us to implement and fund Kirwan 🤷🏾♀️
A day of JOY yesterday celebrating and affirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson with powerhouse women from across the country. We’ve already claimed Judge Jackson’s victory, so our advocacy is a celebration 🖤

For the first time ever, MoCo elected a Black woman to the Maryland General Assembly. And not just one...THREE! I’m extremely proud to make Montgomery Count history with Del. Pam Queen & Delegate-Elect Charlotte Crutchfield!

A great day for Ways & Means! Gov.
@iamwesmoore
testified before the Ways & Means Committee on HB 554, a bill to reduce military retirement income taxes. This was the first time in at least 8 yrs that a Gov has testified before the MGA. I am proud to be a sponsor of this bill.
Thrilled to be included on the

The Power List showcases Maryland’s power players who are leading key organizations, creating change, impacting the community and engaging others to succeed.
Congratulations are in order for
@DavidMoon2014
, appointed Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and
@LCharkoudian
, appointed chair of the Unemployment Insurance Subcommittee of Economic Matters! So proud of our team and our leadership in the House & Senate.
Hogan has dismissed the recommendation of our state election experts by announcing that ballots will not be mailed to voters. Instead, voters will have to *request* a ballot, which the MD Assoc of Election Officials has warned is costly, burdensome and unsuccessful.
I am directing the State Board of Elections to follow existing state law and conduct the November general election with enhanced voting options in light of the
#COVID19
pandemic. This approach will maximize participation while minimizing confusion & risk:
Currently, an officer convicted of a serious crime (murder, lying under oath, etc.) can walk away with their full tax-payer funded pension.
HB 123 creates a process to forfeit the pensions of a rogue officer who is convicted of a felony or perjury.
Hogan wants us to believe that serious public safety issues in Maryland can be solved by writing a big check. His $150 million investment in police after vetoing 3 critical police reform bills this year is astounding.
Thank you
@Marc_Elrich
for taking a stand. MoCo police should focus on shifting the culture and practices that have created distrust and the profiling and police abuse of Black and brown residents instead of advocating for this Blue Lives Matter flag.
My bill addressing student trauma in schools just passed the House unanimously. It’s time for the state to take action to support students and teachers in dealing with trauma. This bill is a first step towards developing trauma-informed schools.
I am grateful to
@GovLarryHogan
for his strong leadership in response to the coronavirus, and I call on him to implement a moratorium on evictions. During this pandemic and economic uncertainty, it’s critical that every resident is able to keep the roof over their head.
We’re usually on the House floor in person on
@DavidMoon2014
’s birthday, and I give a little birthday speech to thoroughly embarrass him. Since we’re fully remote right now, join me here in wishing a happy birthday to Distrct 20’s own David Moon!!! 🎉🎉🎉
1. This is my backyard. I live in the woods!
2. My realtor, Tracey Williams Barnett, is the greatest of all time! See her for all your home buying and selling needs.
It should be the humane policy of Maryland that if a renter is behind on rent and applying for rental assistance, courts should hold off on evicting them while they are in the process of securing financial help.

Rest in perfect peace,

. It’s true what they say about people always remembering how you made them feel. Thank you for always making me feel like I was part of the team and valued. I wish I had chance to say goodbye and give you my gratitude. ❤️
We welcome Judge Bonifant’s decision allowing the State Board of Elections to institute early canvassing for the general election, as I did in 2020 during the pandemic.
My full statement:
The stain of slavery began in MD in 1634. We will never know the names of the slaves whose toil built our state, but today, in 2020, we enshrine these two abolitionists inside the State House built by slaves.
The two Americas. I can't stop thinking about how Chris Christie easily checked himself into a medical facility as a precaution. How many of the over 210k Americans who died of COVID tried to seek care when they desperately needed help but were sent home with no access?
