States should also consider combining federal and state primaries, allowing votes in uncontested races, and eliminating nominating conventions.

Consolidating primary dates can also help. States that hold their election at the same time as another state in the same geographic region see 1.5 percentage points higher turnout

Enthusiasm among Republican voters drove this trend. Participation in Democratic primaries fell from four years ago. Very few people cast ballots for candidates in either major party!

Diving into my new report from @BPC_Bipartisan and @ThorningMichael, we find that about 21% of voters participated in last year's primaries--higher than in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 cycles but still really low!.
