Really enjoying the discussions in this workshop. For the last 4 years, I have worked on this very challenge, closing the data gap. Later this afternoon, I will be sharing lessons learnt in that journey alongside @vukosi and others . See you there.
I’ll be live tweeting from the Centring Data in African AI workshop happening in Kigali at the #DLI2025

With these new GPT drops, I have to see how they handle low-resource languages - especially African languages. Running AfroBench-Lite… stay tuned 👀 In the meantime, check out the performance of previous GPT models:

Come find us at Hall X4 later today! Let’s chat about how LLMs perform on African languages and why multilingual benchmarks need to include African languages if we want truly global LLMs. Poster session starts at 6pm. See you there! 🌍🧠 #ACL2025 #ACL2025NLP
In Vienna this week for #ACL2025! Excited to connect with folks working on NLP evaluations and multilingual NLP I’ll also be presenting AfroBench, evaluation suite for African languages in the poster sessions @6pm today AfroBench is now on @huggingface

Proprietary models (like GPT-4o) far outperform open-weight models (e.g., Gemma 2 27B). Performance drops sharply on African languages — especially where monolingual data is scarce. Low-resource NLP still faces a steep climb.

💡AfroBench at a glance: • Evaluates 12 LLMs (GPT-4o, Gemini, LLaMA, etc) • Tasks: classification, QA, reasoning, generation • Includes AfriADR (diacritics restoration) • Reveals major gaps in African vs English performance • Adds AfroBench-LITE — lowcost 14-language variant
