I’ll never forget when we were asked to go to the Trump White House to talk about criminal justice reform. I asked
@VanJones68
if we should given the blowback he would get.
He didn’t pause and said “Of course. My worst day on Twitter is better than anyone’s best day in prison.”
So proud of you
@KimKardashian
and honored to be a part of your journey. Not only did you pass the baby bar, but you helped pass legislation that freed thousands of ppl, got clemency in the most difficult cases and literally saved lives.
@EdyHaney
OMFGGGG I PASSED THE BABY BAR EXAM!!!!
Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today in the reflection.
For anyone who doesn’t know my law school journey, know this wasn’t easy or handed to me.
Grateful for the opportunity today to highlight the continued need for clemencies (and changes to the clemency process!) and thank the White House for their work to bring more people home!
@AliceMarieFree
@KimKardashian
@EdyHaney
Today Alice, Crystal, Judith, Tynice and I, along with the
@cut_50
team will be at the White House bringing light to these women and discuss more change that our justice system desperately needs!
This man lost 3 years of his life because he didn’t have $500 to bail out on simple possession charges which were later dropped. Meanwhile the state of Alabama charged taxpayers $45,000 to keep him in jail.
There is no justice or common sense in our legal system.
Thread: When working on bail in Alabama, we found a man trapped in jail for cocaine possession because he couldn't pay $500 cash. He had been there for 3 years, and the system had forgotten to give him a lawyer. What happened to him is important. (1)
To be clear
@VanJones68
wasn’t just taking pictures with people on the other side of the aisle, HE HELPED PASS A BILL THAT FREED 16,000+ PEOPLE with them.
For those talking sh*t, how many lives did you save over the last four years?
Before you read the headlines, read the full list. There are hundreds of years of lives saved by clemency on that list. Names the media will probably never say, but names everyone in the justice reform community have spent years fighting for & should be proud of.
I better not hear any Democrats complain either. A sitting president - regardless of party- campaigning on
#cjreform
will help us bring many more people home.
President Trump had 30 seconds to communicate his most effective message in a multi-million $
#SuperBowl
ad. And he chose to feature
@AliceMarieFree
and
#cjreform
. Now...any Republicans out there want to attack him for it???
A 15-year-old on probation has been incarcerated for more than a month for not doing her online schoolwork. During a PANDEMIC!
This is absolutely ridiculous and absolutely dangerous. We need to
#reformprobation
!
It’s come to my attention that ppl think the fight around First Step is over: but the truth is, the hardest part has just begun.
@cut_50
& allies have been working hard on implementation, but we’ve been so busy working we haven’t shared the efforts.
As a result of this effort, which was led by
@jaredkushner
and a bipartisan group of legislators, tens of thousands of people are home with their families. Truly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such meaningful change.
In a time of deep division, we were able to forge bipartisan consensus around the First Step Act – the first criminal justice reform in a generation. It wouldn’t have happened without
@VanJones68
,
@BrookeLRollins
,
@JessicaJackson
, and
@JaRonSmith04
The worst date I ever had was when the guy insisted on ordering something I didn’t want for me, refused to believe I’d been a Mayor until I googled it for him and told me it was “cute” I had gone to law school then asked what all I knew how to cook.
About last night...
1. Lots of people struggle with drug use. I was one of them. We are still good people.
2. White Supremacy has no place in America.
3. They barely touched on policing & CJR- we need a whole debate on just those topics!
#Debates2020
This is just heartbreaking.
Andrea Circle Bear was only 30 years old and died of
#COVID19
in federal prison. She was serving a 26-month sentence for a drug offense and gave birth while on a ventilator. That sentence became a death sentence, and her son lost his mother (1/3)
Have you followed
@REFORM
on IG yet? We’ve got special guest

joining

@tomdestef
@WhiteHouse
@realDonaldTrump
Just pointing to the fact that this does have bipartisan support and as divided as this country is, there is a shot at both sides coming together!
Anyone criticizing the formerly incarcerated grassroots advocates who got pardons or telling them to “refuse” the pardon is a fake activist in my mind. How do you believe in abolition and ending collateral consequences then talk crap about someone for getting a second chance?
Heartbroken and outraged by how many texts and calls I’ve gotten today from loved ones of ppl inside and ppl inside prisons and jails where people are positive for corona.
We saw this coming. We begged for lawmakers to keep people safe & release who they could. They failed.
80% of the women living inside our nation’s prisons and jails are mothers. Thinking about how today must feel for them (especially bc most can’t have visits now) and wishing they were home with their babies.
@REFORM
What kind of country locks people up for being poor?
How about, instead of spending that $$$ on incarcerating him, we spend that money on educating him and helping him find a job so he can support his kids.
A 23-year-old father of two was jailed for two months because he missed his probation officer’s calls. His cell phone service had been turned off when he couldn’t afford to pay his bill.
No one should go to jail because they can’t afford their phone bill!
I can’t even fathom putting a man, who has maintained his innocence from day one, to death without testing all the available evidence (including the DNA on the murder weapon). Please issue a stay for
#RodneyReed
@GovAbbott
and demand the D.A. have the evidence tested.
Only talking to people who already agree with you isn’t advocacy.
Having the difficult conversations, being uncomfortable in the room, hearing the other perspectives and changing people’s minds is advocacy.
One thing I learned in my six years on City Council, is that the most important avenue for change is the budget. Many cities review & approve their budgets in June/July.
If you want to see real change on the local level, go down to your city hall & demand it!
#PoliceReform
📍NEW: Chilling video of El Paso jail inmates hired to move bodies of
#COVID19
deceased patients into mobile overflow morgues. Inmates wear full PPEs & paid $2/hour. They’ve been doing this tough work since Monday, before El Paso increased to 10 mobile morgues. I cry for El Paso.
Having worked on
#CAdeathpenalty
cases, I’ve seen firsthand how broken the death penalty system here is for the over 700 men & women on death row. I applaud Governor
@GavinNewsom
for his courage & leadership in stopping any chance of execution under his watch.
#EndTheDeathPenalty
No one in Texas’s jails or prisons was sentenced by the judge to starve and freeze. If you can’t protect people in your custody, release them.
@GregAbbott_TX
Radical leftists like the authors of the
@NYTimes
1619 Project claim that our experiment in democracy is founded on slavery and racism, and want to indoctrinate kids in our schools with their distortions and lies. We must face them with the truth and stop this madness.
Attn reporters:
Could you stop including the person’s charges every time you report someone in prison/jail has died of COVID? Their sentence didn’t include death by this terrible virus and is irrelevant to the fact that the state/jail failed to keep them safe.
@REFORM
@VanJones68
Just to clarify for some folks who seem confused: presumed innocent till found guilty means you should still assume they are innocent even if they’ve been arrested.
PAUSE!!!!
@BuriedAliveProj
(funded by
@KimKardashian
) got 17 people out of federal prison that were told by fed defenders that they did not qualify for release under first step act. These were 17 people who would have died in prison if it weren’t for them. That deserves 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
Very disturbing, biased and inaccurate piece. I worked alongside this group of Rabbis on the First Step Act and on many clemencies that were not white collar cases. They care deeply about justice and dignity for everyone living behind the prison walls.
It’s really disgusting how DA’s/media/politicians want to put crime survivors/victims families all over the news if they are calling for a person to be incarcerated or put to death but try to silence/leave out the families if they want restorative justice or are against death.
You know how they have a ticker to show national debt increasing? Can we have one that shows the billions on top of billions being spent on incarceration?
A youngish friend with underlying conditions posted about getting the vaccine and ppl attacked her and questioned how she could get it without being 65+.
People don’t owe you a damn explanation into their medical history & conditions, just be happy they are getting vaccinated!
After 7.5 months at a federal detention center, Matthew Charles is officially a free man tonight. “I’m free again, this time I finally don’t have a cloud over my head.” Plans tonight? “Maybe KFC for dinner!” Welcome home, Mr. Charles.
Please educate yourself. And maybe a quick “I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with fires and power grid issues” would be nice too.
But then again when your own state flooded you were too busy thumping your book to pay attention....
Californians can’t cool their homes in the middle of a heat wave because of their liberal politicians’ fantasies about “green energy.”
This fall, vote for plentiful, affordable energy for your family, business, and community.
The companies who make profit off of people being incarcerated should chip in and get blankets, food and water to the prisons and jails in TX right now. Where you at

Alexis Martin is a sex traffic survivor and I was honored to be able to share her story on the Justice Project. Thank you Governor DeWine for commuting her sentence. 🙏🏼
@GovMikeDeWine
I worked closely with
@jaredkushner
on
#firststepact
, I was impressed by his passion for the issue & his ability to bring together such a diverse coalition. He kept his word to us on the left & never gave up- resulting in thousands being freed.
How many days in a row can you wear the same sweatshirt? What if you turn off video on the zoom does that extend it?
Thank you

Guards tazed a half naked pregnant woman for not being able to remove her tongue ring. She miscarried days later. This is why

Thank you
@KimKardashian
and
@kanyewest
for your generous gift to

and other orgs fighting for freedom and human dignity!
Hope you had a happy birthday and day off from studying! ❤️
I got amazing gifts from my whole family and Kanye for me the most amazing bags. But he also donated $1 million to my favorite charities that work so hard on prison reform on my behalf from him and the kids. This makes my heart so happy!
What really matters is the impact you have already started to make, having helped get thousands of people out of prison and fight for justice in some of the most difficult cases. You are a force for freedom and once licensed, you’ll be truly unstoppable!
@KimKardashian
@EdyHaney
and I are so proud of all the hard work you put in studying for this exam,
@KimKardashian
. Only 16% of the people in law study passed the First Year Students Exam in June, many of whom had likely taken it before.
56 people have died in Mississippi Prisons in the last 8 months.
Not a single one of them had a death sentence. It’s time for real reform.
#SB2123
@REFORM
Given how many zoom and conference calls he’s had to listen to, I’m pretty sure this little guy is going to come out talking about sentencing and probation reform. 💙

Thank you
@GovMurphy
for mass testing people working and living in NJ prisons! This is a very important step in preventing and mitigating the spread inside.
@REFORM
@EdyHaney
NEW: At
@NJ_DOC
, universal testing for inmates and staff is expected to start as early as the end of next week.
This is the result of a partnership between the Department and
@RutgersU
on the development of a comprehensive plan to expand testing for all inmates and staff.
In the last four years Republicans: appointed 3 Supreme Court Justices, 54 Court of Appeals judges (1/3 of the appellate bench), and 230 total federal judges.
Democrats- can we PLEASE prioritize nominating & confirming judges this time?
@acslaw
During the campaign
@JoeBiden
said he regretted the 94 crime bill. Said he was a different man. Said he had evolved on the issue of criminal justice reform. Was that all lies?
Folks who care mass incarceration or over-incarceration, do not kid yourself about what's happening here. The Biden admin, in response to months of pressure, is floating the idea of executing the largest one-day expansion of the fed prison population.
Congratulations
@VanJones68
for being named one of Washington’s most influential people on criminal justice reform!
@REFORM
Washington’s Most Influential People | Washingtonian (DC)
This is OUTRAGEOUS! We should not be sending people on parole back to jail for missing curfew, ESPECIALLY during a pandemic, and ESPECIALLY when they're ESSENTIAL WORKERS trying to rebuild their lives and support their family!
My mom was incarcerated for her addiction when I was a child. That resulted in all my siblings being placed in the system. It resulted in almost all of us being incarcerated. If we prioritized treating my mom's addiction vs locking her up my family's life would be very different.
So excited to welcome REFORM to the criminal justice field! You can join the movement to end the cycle of incarceration and reform parole & probation!
@VanJones68
So grateful to
@ParisHilton
for sharing her story and raising awareness of the sexual, physical and mental abuse of children going on in facilities across the country. It’s time to end the abuse and invest in healing and supporting kids (and their families) instead.
Incredible meeting with
@SteveScalise
on the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act. Looking forward to working together to protect our nation’s most vulnerable kids from abusive settings

Science: actually we are working on building a fleet of “cute” robots who will eventually take over the world and kill you all just like in the movies! But they can do back flips!

This man just keeps showing up, doing his best every day, learning from his mistakes, improving his performance & making people of conscience proud. That’s all any of us can do, in whatever job we have. Nobody’s perfect.But in these times, I’m SO glad
@GavinNewsom
is our governor
Thank you
@KimKardashian
for taking the time to come inside and meet Jassy and see the music program! You’ve got the biggest heart and I greatly appreciate how much time you spend getting to know people inside & advocating for their freedom.
Thank you
@gavinnewsom
for granting David Jassy a commutation today! I visited him at San Quentin & saw the music program he ran for youth inside and I know he is going to continue to give back once he is home!

Heard from family members of 4 more people who are coming home under the First Step Act compassionate release this weekend. I remember during the fight to pass it,
@shonhopwood
telling me that he thought this would be the most useful provision and it turns out he was correct.
I went to the pharmacy to get a prescription and they said it wasn’t covered by insurance and would be $900 for the month’s supply. I googled on my phone and found a coupon that made it $100 instead but really healthcare SHOULD NOT work this way.
@EdyHaney
and I are so proud of all the hard work you put in studying for this exam,
@KimKardashian
. Only 16% of the people in law study passed the First Year Students Exam in June, many of whom had likely taken it before.
Thank you for your selfless dedication to civil rights and criminal justice reform, for demonstrating true courage and conviction, and for inspiring so many to get into good trouble. You will be greatly missed.
#ripjohnlewis
One of the biggest frustrations with the First Step Act was not being able to make all of it retroactive. There were ppl inside who would have received a different sentence if they had been sentenced today because of it. Ppl who would be home with their loved ones now.
Join me in giving a huge and well deserved congratulations to
